Violence has broken out in Iran following the landslide re-election of Holocaust denier Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Supporters of the main election challenger to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad clashed with police and set up barricades of burning tires Saturday as authorities claimed the hard-line president was re-elected in a landslide. The rival candidate said the vote was tainted by widespread fraud and his followers responded with the most serious unrest in the capital in a decade.

Iranian Election Fallout Watch

The Obama administration is withholding approval of Iran’s election results.
NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) — The U.S. on Saturday refused to accept hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s claim of a landslide re-election victory in Iran and said it was looking into allegations of election fraud.
Any hopes by the Obama administration of gaining a result similar to Lebanon’s recent election, won by a Western-backed moderate coalition, appeared to be in jeopardy.
“We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds in Iran, but we, like the rest of the world, are waiting and watching to see what the Iranian people decide,” U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said at a news conference with Canada’s foreign affairs minister, Lawrence Cannon.

Truth be told, that even if the entire free world was openly condemning the Iranian regime right now, it might not do any good. The regime is totalitarian by nature, and has as its number one goal, staying in power, no matter what it may take. Plus its an Islamic regime and therefor hates the Infidels, and dar al harb, which includes all truly free, democratic societies.

Damien, I understand that my friend. But you cannot foment revolution by being quiet. Maybe we won't make any difference and push this along by trying. Maybe some of it will get through, maybe not. But we damn sure won't if we remain silent about it.

We either are serious about what we do here or we're just weekend warriors posting only when we have time and it's convenient. I know where I fall, certain where Pasto falls and I'm pretty sure you do as well.

Mousavi is now facing the same fate men like Jefferson and Adams would have had King George been able to catch them, only his will be far more unpleasant and all he did was legally stand for election.

The U.S. has way too much at stake on this one. The entire world does. It ould be far better for the Iranians themselves to oust the regime then to have to let Israel or the U.S. do it. And if the bloggers have even the smallest chance of cheering that on then we MUST do so.

midnight rider,

I agree with you whole heatedly. I am just being a realist and pointing out some unpleasant facts. Overthrowing a regime like the one in Iran, won't be easy, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I'll look for more on this tomorrow. Maybe I'll find something.

Damien -- I knew you did. I'm saying we need to do our part and so many are falling short. You have someone like Atlas who hammers this birth certificate thing but is silent when momentum may be starting. I'm dumbfounded by this.

And besides, this is IBA, (self)righteous outrage is our hallmark :)

hey, i just want some persian ragnarok .. Mousavi may be for makeup and jeans, but he isn't any Sam Adams.

Now as to what might EMERGE from total disorder ... it could hardly be worse. If it was, Israel would simply act immediately ..so personally I hope Mousavi takes the place apart and we see Mesbah Yazdi, Jannatti and the rest hanging by piano wire wrapped around their ankles from lamp posts

Let's face it, Mousavi's "feminist" wife wouldn't even stand up for those women who are beaten and arrested for having their hair show.

Mousavi is a fake reformer.

HOWEVER,

there is something extraordinary going on when the Mullahs decide to arrest the opposition.

That means they are afraid. Somehow, something has gone wrong in their machine. Even though they installed all the candidates, something is not right about Mousavi.

As Epa says, he is no Sam Adams. But, well, he's the best we've got right now.

Our number one job ought to be to exploit the discord within Iran and foment revolution IF WE CAN.
