Tom Hanks: We Want to "Annihilate" Jihadis Because They're "Different Than us"

An excellent post from Zip at Weasel Zippers:

I have a more favorable opinion of maggot shit than I do of Tom Hanks. Note: I literally did a facepalm after reading this, and all along I thought I was numb to this crap...

Via Big Hollywood

HANKS: "Back in World War II, we viewed the Japanese as 'yellow, slant-eyed dogs' that believed in different gods. They were out to kill us because our way of living was different. We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different. Does that sound familiar, by any chance, to what's going on today?

Yeah, we're so horrible that we spent decades (after being attacked) rebuilding Japan into a world power.

It's "different FROM us", Tom. Didn't you pay any attention in English class?

Yeah, I think I'm getting numb at this point as well. But it is still jaw-dropping that a supposedly intelligent adult can hold this view of the Empire of Japan (I suppose the Nazis were just "different" as well?) and the causes of WWII. We've been commenting on Jihad Watch about Beck's slamming Wilders as a "fascist" the other day and how someone like Beck can evade recognizing the real nature of Islam. These people really do put what other people think ahead of their own perception of reality. While people like Wilders are risking their lives to tell the truth, these cowards won't even risk the disapproval of the people who basically define for them what "reality" is.

Even beyond moral considerations, how the hell do you do that functionally? If somebody locks Hanks in a room with a video doc of, say, the Rape of Nanking, does he mentally paste an image of Abu Gahraib in front of his eyes so he can draw "equivalencies"?

Well, here's my $.02... Hanks projects on film for HBO especially have been pretty factual. No matter his political suasion or internal compulsions to believe is what cannot be believed in. It's so odd that he makes historical comparison in his head that are so factually incorrect and yet his films are dead on.

Here's what these specials show...

America IS an exception.
We have warts, but we ARE almost completely different.
For better or worse.
We are invented and designed.
And when it comes to war, we'll do whatever we are compelled to do including demonizing the people trying to kill us, and wiping out entire cities in a moment.

A wart?

Only if we are bent on conquest for our own gain.

You might make a case for that in the Black Hills, but not in Europe or Asia, or anywhere else.

To quote culturist John, "Diversity exists," but what he means by "diversity," are things that are much more important and meaningful than one's physical appearance, or style of dress, or taste in food or music.

Hanks is not condoning the statement he made, he actually criticizing it. He stating that people thought like that in the past, and to some extent still do today, and that's it's wrong
