By the 18th century tarring and feathering was not usually fatal, but the hot tar must have caused injury and it was a very nasty form of punishment. (If you've never read Whittier's "Skipper Ireson's Ride", treat yourself and look it up.)

Sam Adams has the reputation of chief rablerouser of Boston, but he had all he could do to keep John Hancock from running down the street to stand with the Minutemen on Lexington Green. Hancock had all the money so Adams insisted he keep it, and himself, safe and they escaped.
