A Cathay Pacific flight was en route to Vancouver International Airport when the pilot issued an alert. |
Cathay Pacific flight number 839 was enroute when the pilot issued an alert. The Department of National Defence immediately sent its fight jets into action from Comox, B.C., say sources. The jets escorted the plane into Vancouver International Airport at around 1:40 p.m. local time.
The order to send the jets was made from the Canadian Norad regional headquarters in Winnipeg.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay confirmed the threat.
"The CF-18 escorted the aircraft to Vancouver and it landed without incident," MacKay said.
There are unconfirmed reports the plane is sitting on the tarmac with passengers still on board. The plane has been towed to a secure part of the airport.
The investigation is being handled by the RCMP.

Maybe...
Jihadi coming out of Hong Kong?
They will not (intentionally) telegraph their intentions. If they intend to take out a plane, they'll just blow it without warning.
More likely either a kook or very possibly a probe testing the response.
But the shit is we HAVE to respond to it anyway because otherwise. . .

The police spokeswoman said the bomb threat had been received by telephone.
Comments at the CNN blog indicate this flight is routinely scheduled to continue to JFK.
Think of the cost of all this scrambling.
Financial jihad?
Agree with MR.
In fact, plane might just simply DISAPPEAR over the depths of the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian Ocean with no word except failure to show up on next radar
AOW - Financial jihad extends beyond the govt. response with the costs associated with scrambling fighter jets. These incidents also infect the psyche of the airline's lifeline - potential pasengers. Bet you are all aware of individuals within your own personal circle of friends/relatives who refuse to fly. With fuel cost rising and passengers reconsidering mode of transportation due to cost/safety considerations, these incidents serve the financial jihad on many levels.
