All of us, every single man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth were born with the same unalienable rights; to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, if the governments of the world can't get that through their thick skulls, then, regime change will be necessary.

Question: Why Are There Screaming Headlines On Drudge And Yahoo About The World Cup?
Don't they know ...
NO ONE CARES!!!
What a dumbass sport.
Wake me up if the rest of the world ever starts playing REAL FOOTBALL.
I don't normally care either but I did care when England could only draw with the US yesterday. Most of us over here were wanting England to kick ass . . . sigh, it didn't work out that way because half of the US players play in the English league and the US team is not as rubbish as it used to be.
The rest of the world thinks soccer is real football so Americans cannot always be right.
Actually the England-USA match yesterday was watched by tens of millions of Americans, and it was a great game.
Don't tell me you'd rather watch a bunch of lanky freaks jumping up and down in their underwear, i.e. the NBA? Now that is the very definition of a dumbass sport ;)
Someone once said that soccer is the metric system in short pants, so Americans will never get it. But I think the TV ratings for yesterdays game were quite high, though I haven't seen the numbers yet.
It's hard to introduce a new sport into an already saturated market, competing with football, baseball, basketball, hockey, NASCAR, etc. So soccer will always be a minor sport in the US, just like basketball will never be able to compete with hockey (both are winter sports) in Canada.
I'm not really a big soccer fan, but I like the World Cup. In fact I'm watching Serbia vs. Ghana right now. I like the nationalist aspect of it, two sides competing for national pride and bragging rights. It's a peaceful proxy for war!
It's true that immigrants love soccer far more than the native born, but where I live it's 50% immigrants, so the World Cup is HUGE here. Bars open at 7:00 am for the duration and are inevitably packed with fans. Tens of thousands of people fly the flags of their favourite teams on their cars. I would estimate that the big 5 around here are:
1. Portugal 2. England 3. Brazil 4. Italy 5. Germany
I'd imagine that the most popular team in SoCal would be Mexico, by far. Do you have the flags-on-cars phenomenon down there?
To Ray: I'm not much of a fan, but my son watched the USA/UK game and said we were lucky. I afterward saw the goal which confirmed his statement. The last time I was interested in soccer was during the 1994 World Cup. I followed the whole thing all the way to the final game between Brazil and Italy. I sat there stunned when the game was decided over a shoot out! An effin shoot out!!! That was it for me as far as soccer goes, the world can keep it.
The thing about the Lakers or any other league team is that they have no loyalty to their nation or even to their city. Remember, the Lakers started out in Minneapolis.
And the players are just mercenaries recruited from anywhere in the world. They play only for the almighty dollar, not for love of country like national team players do.
Also the Lakers must have played 100+ games so far this season to get where they are, the vast majority of which were completely meaningless--not to mention as boring as church, lol.
In contrast World Cup teams play a maximum of 7 games every 4 years, so every game is crucially important.
So enjoy your Lakers-Celtics final, which will be ignored by 99% of the world's population, while I, along with billions of others, enjoy the World Cup.
Jeppo, So, I guess you must have liked when Kobe and Lebron brought home the Gold for TeamUSA, huh?
You said: enjoy your Lakers-Celtics final, which will be ignored by 99% of the world's population, while I, along with billions of others, enjoy the World Cup.
I say; Far as I know, Michael Jordan is the most famous and liked athlete in the world. How'd that happen if no one cares about the NBA?
Actually I'm not a fan of basketball or Team USA. This on the other hand still gives me goosebumps.
You think Michael Jordan is the world's most popular athlete? Maybe, but I would have guessed Tiger Woods, at least until a couple of months ago LOL!
You're right, the NBA is probably more popular than I gave it credit for. But I think you'll concede that the worldwide TV ratings for the World Cup will utterly dwarf those of the NBA finals.
There is a great Simpson's episode on soccer (football). It shows the American mindset of the sport perfectly. My husband says that there's fights in the stands, because the game is sooo boring.

Jeppo,
The only people in America who care about Soccer are immigrants, legal and illegal.
And yes, I do love the dumbass sport called basketball.
I actually don't care that much about "real football". That was just a joke.
The point is, Americans do not care about Soccer, and yet, the fucking headlines act as if we do.
Why do you think that is?

No, I haven't seen people waving the Mexican flag. However, I have seen a lot of Mexicans waving Lakers flags.
It's the NBA finals right now.
The Mexican, Filipino, White, and Black communities seem to be pretty united in our love for the Lakers here in SoCal.
NUT BUTTER CLEAN UP ON THE 40 METER LINE..!!!

When men's sports are on tv, especially football, ... the crime rate goes down.
I used to get annoyed at how men act over sports and how their sports rule tv, ... but if it reduces crime, then have it.
