Obama: Bullying should not be inevitable, accepted
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says children shouldn't have to accept bullying as an inevitable part of growing up.
The president and first lady Michelle Obama are hosting a conference Thursday on preventing bullying. About 150 students, parents and teachers are meeting at the White House to discuss their experiences with bullying as well as what schools and communities are doing to stop it.
He says the country is realizing the harmful effects of this type of harassment as more students report it. In some instances, young people are said to have committed suicide to escape being bullied.
Mrs. Obama told conference participants that the issue of bullying hits home for her and the president. They are the parents of two daughters.
