Last night, I looked into getting absentee ballots for Mr. AOW and me so that we can vote in the Virginia Primary on March 1, 2016. We were planning to vote for any GOP candidate not approved by the GOP establishment.
For as long as I can remember, here in Virginia we have had open primaries. That is, voters did not have to affirm Party affiliation to vote in primaries.

BTW, no such certification is required for the 2016 Democratic Primary here in Virginia.

It looks to me as the GOP establishment is running scared. However, they have dug I their heels and will continue their nefarious doings, I think it very likely that the GOP establishment candidate will be the nominee,. We shall see.

I have noted for months how the GOP establishment despises and disdains Cruz.
And Trump.
And Carson.
If the GOP establishment can manage it, t hey will see to it that none of the above are on the GOP ticket for Novembet 2016.
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see J b Bush on the ticket -- although the GOP establishment appears to have shifted to Rubio.

I'll be voting in the SC GOP primary where we have no party registration. Unless he goes down like the Hindenburg in the next couple of weeks I'm betting Trump will get 50% of the vote. LOL.

That article you posted from Michael Gerson makes two claims that I have been stating over and over.
1) "Cruz’s nomination would represent the victory of the hard right — religious right and tea party factions — within the Republican coalition. After he loses, the ideological struggles within the GOP would go on."
and
2) "If Trump were the nominee, the GOP would cease to be."

I'll go with the latter.
Gerson makes a good case, imo, that Cruz would lose.

So the choice is Cruz losing or the destruction of the GOP>
Definitely the latter is preferable.
