Russia's Medvedev promises 'crueler' measures

MAKHACHKALA, Russia — President Dmitry Medvedev made a surprise visit Thursday to the violence-wracked southern province of Dagestan, telling police and security forces to use tougher, "more cruel" measures to fight the "scum" responsible for terrorist attacks.

Russia's security chief said some terror suspects had been detained.

In his dress — a black T-shirt under a black suit coat — and rough language, Medvedev was following the style of Russia's powerful prime minister, Vladimir Putin. . .

. . .Medvedev said much more needed to be done to stop the attacks.

"The measures to fight terrorism should be expanded, they should be more effective, more harsh, more cruel, if you please," he told local officials in a televised meeting.

Funerals were held Thursday at four Moscow cemeteries for some of the subway victims. At the Khovanskoye cemetery, the family, friends and colleagues of Anna Permyakova, a 34-year-old nurse, could not hold back tears as they placed flowers on her open casket. Permyakova had worked in a rehabilitation center and many of her former patients attended the funeral in wheelchairs.

Federal Security Service director Alexander Bortnikov, who joined Medvedev in Dagestan, said the organizers of the Moscow attacks have been identified as "bandits" from the Northern Caucasus and some had been detained. He did not give specific numbers.

"We know the personalities of organizers," Bortnikov said during the meeting. "We have detained a number of people, conducted interrogations, got evidence."

In recent months, police and security forces have killed at least two high-profile Islamic militants, but they have been unable to capture the veteran Chechen militant Doku Umarov, who has claimed responsibility for the Moscow subway attacks.

"We have torn off the heads of the most notorious bandits, but clearly this was not enough. In any case, we will find them all and punish them," Medvedev said.

Umarov, who leads Islamic militants in Chechnya and throughout the North Caucasus, said the Moscow subway bombings were revenge for the killing of civilians by Russian security forces.

"Any politician, any journalist who accuses me of terrorism only makes me laugh, causes me to grin. I have not heard anyone accuse Putin of terrorism for the murder of civilians who were killed on his orders," Umarov said in a video posted Wednesday on kavkazcenter.com, a Web site used by rebels.

Umarov seemed to be taunting Putin, who had just vowed to "drag out of the sewer" the terrorists who plotted the subway attacks.

Umarov, 45, fought Russian forces in both separatist wars in Chechnya of the past 15 years. Shortly after taking over the leadership of the rebel movement in 2006, he announced a change of tactics. Instead of struggling for Chechen independence, the militants would seek to create an Islamic state across the North Caucasus. Umarov declared himself the emir, or military leader, of a Caucasus Emirate.

It is unclear, however, how much power he wields over the militants operating throughout the region.

The terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus are believed to be motivated not only by radical Islam but in some cases by a desire for personal revenge against police and security forces, who have been accused of killings, kidnappings and torture. The heavy-handed tactics have served to swell the ranks of Islamic militants.

WHEN I TALK to people about Islam's relentless encroachment and the goals and methods of jihad, the first thing they usually say is, "What can we do about it?" Usually this is not said with hopelessness, but with a sense of urgency. If it is the first time they've heard anything about this, they have a kind of panicked look in their eye, and the question comes out as a kind of desperate plead: What can we do?!

This is an entirely appropriate response. I now consider this an indication that someone has really understands the situation. When you're telling someone about jihad, about taqiyya, about the incessant push for concessions, about the passages in the Qur'an that support these things, and then they ask you what can be done about it, you can say, "Go to WhatYouCanDoAboutIslam.com."

You can make a sticker with that domain name on it and stick it to your copies of Obsession when you loan them out. You can print the domain name on a business card and hand it to people when they ask you that question. You can share the domain name on your web site or blog.

Part of the reason people don't like hearing about jihad is they don't know what they can do about it — it's a little too much to confront if nothing can be done. And that's something to keep in mind when you're telling people about this stuff. Always present it in a way that makes it clear we can do something about it.

To give you an idea of the difference between feeling you can do something and feeling you can't, imagine you are told you have terminal cancer, you're going to die, and there's nothing you can do about it. You have a kind of cancer that has no treatment.

Now imagine you're told you have cancer, but if you go through something difficult (like fasting or chemotherapy), it will very likely cure you.

There's a huge difference in how you would take news about cancer, isn't there? The emotional impact would be totally different. The news that you have cancer is much more tolerable the second way. Why? Only because you can do something about it.

After hearing about the third jihad, people are motivated or at least frightened, and that's a perfect time to give them something practical they can do about it. Tell them they must visit WhatYouCanDoAboutIslam.com.

A Different Way To Deal With Jihadi Pirates

I'm reading the book, White Gold: The Extraordinary Story of Thomas Pellow and Islam's One Million White Slaves, and I came across something interesting. Most of the book follows the true story of a British kid who becomes a slave for twenty-three years to the sultan of Morocco. Ships from Morocco were nabbing ships from all over Europe, stealing the plunder and taking the Europeans captive to be sold as slaves in the North African cities of Algiers and Meknes.

The Jihadis also raided the coast of Europe. They sometimes captured all the people of a random, isolated town along the coast — men, women, and children — and took them back to North Africa to be sold as slaves.

England's response to this was unbelievably weak. I'm only halfway through the book, but so far they have shown no backbone whatsoever. They make ineffective attempts to BUY their citizens back, and they make "peace agreements" which, of course, the Muslims ignore when they wish.

That's how the English were dealing with it. And it went on for over two hundred YEARS!

Yesterday I came across a comment on an online article detailing how the Dutch handled a similar situation. They had been paying off the Algerian Corsairs (Muslim pirates), but the Corsairs seized Dutch ships anyway.

So the Dutch sent a squadron of warships to the main harbor of Algiers. On the way there, they captured several Corsair ships and towed them into the harbor, and demanded all their Dutch citizens back or they would hang all the Jihadis from the Corsairs.

The pasha thought they were bluffing, so they hung all their Muslim captives and left the ships in the harbor and went out to find more. They towed in another batch of Corsairs and made the same demand.

And what do you think happened?

All Dutch slaves were immediately released by the Algerians.

Why Do So Few People Know About Islam's Political Goals?

In an article on Sue Myrick's Anti-Jihad Caucus, Investors.com said something quotable. So I'm going to, uh, quote it:

"The media and academia have whitewashed jihad or ducked the issue entirely, petrified as they are of looking intolerant toward Muslims. Meantime, well-funded apologists such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations have gone on the offensive against the few critics who have spoken out, further confusing Americans about the gravity of the threat.

"The jihadists have become incredibly advanced in their public relations efforts," Myrick lamented. And we have limited tools to counteract their propaganda, thanks to institutionalized religious tolerance even for creeds hostile to our way of life.

"The Anti-Jihad Caucus dares to right that imbalance. Its main goal is to educate members of Congress about the Islamic threat so they can talk candidly to their constituents about it."

STAY FOCUSED

The following is an excerpt from an article entitled, Your War On Jihad:

"By internalizing our knowledge about Islamic supremacism and Jihad, our direction is clear. We must confront such an anti-equality, anti-liberty ideology. But we must make certain we stay focused on the enemy ideology, not on petty conflicts among each other, and not on frustrations.
