Some Sunni insurgency groups have formed up with Iran-backed Hizbullah
WASHINGTON — Sunni insurgents have joined the Shi'ite Hizbullah in the war against Israel.Despite religious edicts, Sunni groups participated in the Hizbullah war against Israel, suspended by the United Nations-arranged ceasefire on Aug. 14. The Washington-based Jamestown Foundation said the largest Lebanese Sunni partner of Hizbullah was Jemaah Islamiya.
"It is fighting alongside Hizbullah to fend off Israel's incursion into Lebanon, sending the Al Fajr Forces its military wing, to engage in combat with the Israeli Defense Forces," Jamestown said in a report authored by Jordanian expert Abdul Hameed Bakier.
Jemaah Islamiya has confirmed its participation in the Hizbullah war.
Jemaah chairman Faisal Malawi said Sunnis must participate in what he termed the "defense of Lebanon as they do in Palestine."
"They [Lebanese Sunnis] have been marginalized for decades because the circumstances weren't suitable for everyone to participate in the honorable resistance," Malawi said.
