The Dead Tree Squeaks, Meekly

(Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council has ratcheted up sanctions on Iran for refusing to suspend nuclear enrichment and other sensitive activities.

Following are details about the sanctions and those already imposed by the U.N. Security Council and the United States.

-- The sanctions resolution called for more travel and financial curbs on Iranian individuals and companies and makes some restrictions mandatory.

-- It also expanded a previous partial ban on trade in items with both civilian and military uses to cover sales of all such technology to Iran.

-- The new resolution adds the names of 13 individuals and 12 companies to the list of people and firms suspected of aiding Iran's nuclear and missile programs.

The Usual Charactors

Plans for a new resolution against Iran at the UN's nuclear watchdog have been dropped, reports quoting diplomats say.

Diplomats speaking anonymously to news agencies said Western states had scrapped the plans in the face of opposition led by China and Russia.

And The Winner Is

The Iranian leadership certainly thinks it is winning, however.

Before the latest UN vote, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that Iran had "honestly and seriously achieved a great victory", for which he praised the country's political leadership.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared recently: "Everyone has understood that Iran is the number one power in the world.

"Today the name of Iran means a firm punch in the teeth of the powerful...

"The enemies of the nation and bullying powers do not dare to admit that this nation has won in the nuclear field."

UN approach: "We asked nicely, now stop it or we will have to ask again."

US approach: "We really, really want to invade you. Go on... give us an excuse."

Iran response: "Yeah, you all too busy trying to keep Iraq stable to invade us. Bring it on, western pigs."

Wouldn't that mean that Iran is punching itself in the teeth?

We should only hope. Afterall, suicide is their forte.
