All of us, every single man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth were born with the same unalienable rights; to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, if the governments of the world can't get that through their thick skulls, then, regime change will be necessary.
Hunter S. Thompson was an extreme sportsman of the mind. In an earlier thread (about Amy Winehouse), Shiva and I were going back and forth about drug use. He was condemning her for her drug use. And, I posed the question of why we don't condemn surfers for surfing 50 foot waves, or snowboarders for going off cliffs, but we condemn artists for using drugs, which clearly help them achieve the states of mind by which they produce their art.
Some artists are extreme sportsmen of the mind.
HST was one. Marlon Brando. Pablo Picasso. Salvador Dali. Marcel Proust (who, if I'm not mistaken, smoked opium), etc. etc.
By the way, HST is among my favorite writers. There is a book called The Great Shark Hunt, which is a compilation of many of his writings through the years. I have read and re-read that book.
It is instructive to observe how much his writing changed when he began using LSD and other drugs. He became the HST that we all know and love.
Previous to that he was a good, but not the astounding writer he would later become.
Drugs did not destroy HST's writing. They opened him to the possibility of writing in a different manner. They helped him along his path.
All this being said, I am not an advocate of drugs. I have never taken drugs myself.
Why?
Because I knew that I wanted my brain to function normally, that I wanted to get married and have children, and provide for my family, and I want to, if I can, live a long life.
HST ended up blowing his brains out. That is not a surprising end for a drug user.
And, as I said, in the earlier comments thread, when a drug user dies from drug use (whether from overdose or by his own hand), I do not feel sorry for him or his family in the slightest.
I've always been a Thompson fan although my favorite is Hell's Angels which inculdes his piece about "the edge"
“The Edge… there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.” Hunter S. Thompson

"THIS IS THE BUSINESS WE HAVE CHOSEN."
