we had a war with Islam in 1801.. the Muslims were raiding our ships, killing and enslaving our citizens.

saying that we had no fight with them.. quit killing us, the Muslims replied that they kill sinners who aren't Muslims.. to paraphrase. nothing has changed
Only the obfuscations have changed to protect the cowards.
Marines are called "Leather Necks" due to the Barbary Pirates war in which the Muslims were beheading marines till the latter started wearing leather collars to try to protect themselves. Looks like it's time to go back to the shores of Tripoli.
Dag,
Is that true?
That's interesting.
I picked up that information from Joshua E. London, Victory in Tripoli. (Hoboken, New Jersey: John wiley and Sons, 2005.) Sorry, I don't have a page number off-hand. No indications in the index or bibliography.
Why am I not surprised that the term "Leathernecks" to refer to Marines stems from battles with Moslems? Indeed, I think that I've read something about that before. Somewhere.
A few years ago, one of my world history students commented at the end of the course, "I've learned one thing in this course: wherever Muslims go, trouble follows."
She didn't do very well overall in the course, but she did get THAT POINT at least.
The textbook we used referred to MTP as "a deluded dreamer with delusions of grandeur." Obviously, not a textbook used in the public school system.
