Is this guy going to be fired? If not, then that ought to be the last dollar anyone of conscience gives to Amnesty International.
(JPost)– The head of Amnesty International’s Finnish branch, Frank Johansson, told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday that he stands by his statement that Israel is a “scum state.”
Writing in his blog, which appears on the Web site of Finland’s third largest newspaper Iltalehti, Johansson wrote on Monday that “A friend of mine who works in Israel was visiting [and] while piling wood in the shed, we got to [talking about] his favourite topic. [After] several years of residence in the Holy Land, he has come to the conclusion that ‘Israel is a scum state.’ Based on my own visit[s], which occurred during the 1970s and for the last time in the 1990s, I agree.”
An English translation of Johansson’s blog first appeared Tuesday on the Web site Tundra Tabloids, a pro-Israel blog that monitors anti-Israeli sentiments in the Finnish media and blogosphere.
Speaking from Finland, Kenneth Sikorski, who runs the Web site and picked up Johansson’s remarks, told The Jerusalem Post that Johansson’s comments are “absolutely atrocious and indicative of a problem of systematic anti-Semitism.”
Asked why he termed Israel a “scum state,” Johansson told the Post in a telephone interview that it was because Israel has “repeatedly flouted international law,” and due to his “personal experiences inside and outside of Israel with meeting Israelis.”
Johansson said that his remarks were not anti-Semitic. “I actually praise Breaking the Silence,” he said, referring to an Israeli organization claiming to collect and share testimonies of former IDF soldiers over human rights violations they allegedly witnessed, while rarely providing names of troops, dates and locations of these incidents.
Asked whether there are other countries aside from Israel that, according to him, meet the definition of a “scum state,” Johansson did not specify any, but noted that there are “Russian officials” who meet the criteria.

Ritva,
I hate to be rude, but, I'm sorry, whatever language you just commented in, I don't read or speak it, and the same is probably true for most of the people here at the IBA. Since I don't even know what language that is, I can't even copy paste it into Babel Fish to translate it.
Dear Damien,
Sorry, I used swedish on my comment, because I hope any Finnish-swedish will read the blogg. Mr. Johansson has probably the same backgroud as me, despite Israel is one of my three homelands. He has probably grown up priviledged in Finland -the best country in world to live-all after Newsweek. So he travels to Jerusalem, meet probably both sides extremists. Israel is not Mea Sharim or Bnei Brak only. Both sides majority population wants a safe life for their families.
I wrote to Mr. Johansson following-
"You maybe lost your way there and found yourself on the otherside. Israel is a democrcy with ca. 6 million inhabitants, 2 million are arabs and druses. A state cannot be scum, state is its inhabitants. You maybe base your mind on one negative meeting, and throw out opinions, what makes organisations happy, whose only purpose is to greate unstability. Arabs and jews have in history lived peacefully side by side, and so it will be in the future. Most of the people want to have a peacefull life.
Let us avoid agitators as you.
I suggest for you to take a sauna bath, and have a second thought."-
Damien, you want to have same in finnish?
I wonder, why Amnesty doesn't work to get Gilat Shalit free.
Thanks, Ritva.
Isn't it interesting how "Human Rights Organizations" suddenly drop the ball when it comes to reporting on what Muslims do to Jews.
Ritva,
Thanks, that's reasonable. Maybe some swedish people do read this blog, but I have a feeling that most of the ones that do, speak English as well.
