Academic at University of Illinois: The Students “Nativist Display” on 9/11 of Chanting “USA” at a Football Game is Offensive to Muslims

(Daily Illini)- The vast majority of 9/11 observances in this country cannot be seen as politically neutral events. Implicit in their nature are the notions that lives lost at the World Trade Center are more valuable than lives lost in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere; that the motives of the 9/11 attackers had nothing to do with genuine grievances in the Islamic world regarding American imperialism; and that the U.S. has been justified in the subsequent killing of hundreds of thousands in so-called retaliation.

The observance at Saturday’s football game was no different. A moment of silence was followed by a military airplane flyover; in between, Block-I students chanted “USA, USA.” This was neither patriotism nor remembrance in any justifiable sense, but politicization, militarism, propaganda and bellicosity. The University is a public institution that encompasses the political views of all, not just the most (falsely) “patriotic.” Athletic planners should cease such exploitation for political purposes. They might at least consider how most Muslim students, American or otherwise, would respond to this nativist display; or better, Muslims and others that live their lives under the threat of our planes, drones and soldiers.
The overwhelmingly white, privileged, Block-I students should be ashamed of their obnoxious, fake-macho, chicken-hawk chant, while poverty-drafted members of their cohort fight and die in illegal and immoral wars for the control of oil. University administrators need to eliminate from all events such “patriotic” observances, which in this country cannot be separated from implicit justifications for state-sponsored killing.

David Green should get a life. This is patriotism. Things like this are not a sign of blind hatred or white privilege. Also why should this thing be offensive to Muslim Americans who actually see themselves as Americans first and Muslims second?

Something happens with the most recent posts that go beyond the current page? You can't find them under current posts, you can't find them under the next date. I've noticed this for a long time, and I am searching to see if Khurram called me a son of a bitch again for calling him a raghead, but I can't find the story? They disappear for a day or two before popping back up under a later date.
Anywho, I was slightly bothered last night to be called a racist and bigot for using the relatively silly derogatory term raghead, which is essentially making fun of their rags on their heads and is a pretty innocuous form of ridicule, only to be called a son of a bitch, which is not very innocuous and is very offensive and very sexist, which all middle easterners, arabs and mooslums are of the first rank: bigoted, egomaniacal sexists! Hey Khurram, If I'm a son of a bitch, which is impossible, because I'm a woman, but if you're calling my mother a bitch, then you're defaming my mother, wich is a lot more offensive than me calling you a raghead and if you're going to try and defame my mother because all of you are sexist pigs who do not respect women, then your mother must be a very repressed and powerless, sad woman who obviously could not teach you any manners because you are a tiny dick arab, middle easterner or mooslum whose male ego is out of control. You can only control women through subjegating and beating them into subservience! What a big man you are! And it's just like an arab, middle easterner or mooslum to take offense at something relatively innocuous and then to slander and offend worse in turn. Oh, your pride is so important!

The only way for us to solve the problem you are pointing out is to go to daily archiving. As this blog is four years old, the archiving on each page would be very, very long.
