Israel develops explosive sensor based on nanotechnology
TEL AVIV -- Israel has developed a miniature sensor meant to detect explosives.
So WHY is a state born in socialism out entrpreneurial-ing the USA today?Israel has overseen the development of a sensor said to be more sensitive than the nose of a dog trained to detect explosives. Tel Aviv University said the sensor was based on nanotechnology and could be also used to detect weapons of mass destruction agents.
"The new sensor is highly portable and is more sensitive and reliable at detecting explosives than sniffer dogs," the university said on Nov. 3.
The statement said scientists plan to develop a prototype of the sensor by 2012. The university has teamed with an unidentified company to develop and market the sensor, which contains silicon nano-wires.
In August 2010, the Israeli researchers, led by Professor Fernando Patolsky, disclosed the development project in the German scientific journal Angewandte Chemie. Since then, the university has been briefing military units and companies.
Researchers said the chips in the device were fitted with 200 sensors that could detect a range of explosives. They said the device could identify anything from TNT to anthrax from several meters away.
Patolsky said both the Israeli and U.S. militaries have demonstrated what he termed "tremendous interest" in the new system. He said the first sensor could be introduced in the market between 2011 and 2012.
"There is a need for a small, inexpensive hand-held device that will enable rapid and effective identification of explosives," Patolsky said.

Epaminondas,
Good! Maybe we can use it for airport security.
