I personally am apposed to all discrimination, and that includes against gays. You may have your own personal beliefs regarding gays and that's alright. We all have differing views on topics. That is what makes America the best country in the world. We accept, but may not agree. And that's perfectly alright.To me, being in military is mountains above your sexuality. Being in war, whether you on the frontlines or in the back, is extremely stressful. To the extreme. In that type of environment, your libido has been filed away in the far reaches of your brain.
In addition, gays are only interested in those who are interested in them. They are not out to revert heterosexuals. They see themselves as being gay due to genetics. And they understand that heterosexuals are that way, due to genetics. They may peek, yes. But if you were to look at studies, you would find a very large percentage of the "hetero" group, also "peek". I can guarantee, you will not hear out about "gi Jane/John going around jumping and groping.
Anyways, it appears that the vaste majority of military personal agree with me.
Get rid of don't ask, don't tell.

Julian Assange is a foreigner. He is requesting top secret information from an insider. He is a conspirator. A spy, a foreign spy.
Whatever happened to the required military response that we had in the olden days?
Seems to me, the convicted spy shoot be shot, or at least hung.

I assume everyone here knows Bradley Manning, the source of the wikileaks, is Gay. That was his beef with the service he joined knowing the rules.

I think Don't Ask Don't Tell is good policy for the military. I've always thought it was.
I think allowing out gays in the military is a stupid idea. Very stupid.

Given that we are in a time of war, the combat arms communities across all Services required special focus and analysis. Though the survey results demonstrate a solid majority of the overall U.S. military who predict mixed, positive or no effect in the event of repeal, these percentages are lower, and the percentage of those who predict negative effects are higher, in combat arms units. For example, in response to question 68a, while the percentage of the overall U.S. military that predicts negative or very negative effects on their unit’s ability to “work together to get the job done” is 30%, the percentage is 43% for the Marine Corps, 48% within Army combat arms units, and 58% within Marine combat arms units.
Only 28% of the 400000 polled responded.
Nowhere in the 38 Page Questionaire does it actually ask them if they WANTED No Ask No Tell repealed.
Just to be clear, the reason I think it is a stupid idea is because I believe men are sexual aggressors, whether they be straight or gay.
If gay men are out in the military (if they announce they are gay) then, as it is their nature to be aggressors, real sexuality will become an issue in the barracks. Posturing is normal for men. And, it is part of male camaraderie, and male challenge/competition, and ultimately, male excellence. But, posturing would be impeded by the intrusion of a real sexual element.
Maybe I'm wrong on this (after all, I'm not in the military), but I don't think so.
I guess my larger opinion on this is, the introduction of homosexuality into the military, in the sense that it accepted as a normal expression within barracks, etc., seems to me to be an extension of the feminization of male culture.
I don't see gay people walking around the front shouting "I'm out!".
To me, this is keeping good people out who seriously want to do what all of the other military personnel are doing, fight for their country.
In the past, blacks were kept out. Japanese Americans were kept out. Women were kept out.
We now know that this was a mistake. People need to grow up. There are a lot of people in the military who have no problem with this. Those who do, are still regurgitating the old stereotypical attitudes about gays, that their parents instilled in them.
Kinda reminds me of the stereotypical attitudes that were instilled back when the blacks, Japanese Americans and women were banned from serving.
Epa, you have a point about a gay unit. Not that I totally agree with it. But, we started with black units, women's units and Japanese units.
They proved themselves. And now, they have been integrated and are fully accepted into the military.
The attitudes back then about blacks, japanese americans and women were no more backwards than the attitudes today about gays.
At least the subject is being seriously discussed.

I'm speaking from the perspective of having listened to friends who are ex-military talk about the idea of gays in the military. They didn't like it.
But, my friends were in the military 20-30 years ago.
Maybe the new generation would feel differently about it.
Personally ... you have to SHOOT straight, not be straight.
But distracting thoughts in combat are never a good idea.
This is a practical issue.
Let it hang out and if the troops don't like it, I'm sure word will get around.
Leading to straight regiments and gay regiments?
Maybe a gay anti taliban strike force of real killers is just what we need to strike fear
