More analysis from Northeast Intelligence Network on the contrail/optical illusion/cheap fireworks/swamp gas/whateverthehell it was that lit up the sky over LA yesterday.
An update at Atlas from a former jet test pilot identifies the missle as probably an ICBM, and points out that the US would not launch such a test without notifying air traffic and shipping or refuse to acknowledge such a launch.
Of missiles & money – don’t ask, won’t tell
By Doug Hagmann
9 November 2010:
A person of normal sensibilities would have to be intellectually numb, overly medicated or otherwise too preoccupied with keeping food on the table and the proverbial wolves from their doors not to realize that there is something very, very wrong going on today. By now, most Americans have heard about the sighting of what appears to be a missile, and a big one at that, apparently being launched from a location about 35 miles off the coast of Los Angeles around sunset last evening. Video of the incident was taken from a KCBS news helicopter flying over the mainland at the time.
The manner in which this story unfolded should be a story by itself. The corporate media, quick to comment on the culturally indigenous dancing rituals of U.S. royalty, were quite slow on the uptake on an issue that has serious national security implications in light of our government’s response to this incident.
Today, Americans were treated with a number of explanations from our government officials, military pundits, and even media personalities about the incident. Those explanations range from the “embarrassing if true” to the “downright insulting,” with numerous variations in between. Ranging from having no information on the incident, to assurances that an investigation is underway, and my personal favorite, “it is the contrail from an airplane that caused an optical illusion due to a problem of visual perspective,” we are either in a boatload of trouble with regard to our national defense, or the hubris of the power elite is at an all time high.
As news of the event began to appear in the media, I contacted several well placed and trusted intelligence and military sources in an effort to determine the truth about the incident. These sources, as I was reminded by one during our conversation, are risking their careers to talk to me. And they talk to me not because of my charm or influence, both of which I admittedly lack, but because they care about the current status and future of our great country. And there is no better reason. I was less than reassured from what I learned today.
According to one source within the Pentagon, many of the top brass were in unscheduled, high level meetings throughout the day. Although he was not privy to the information imparted during these meetings, he told me that “there was an air of deep concern among the officials,” and all participants had a DAWT policy (don’t ask because I won’t tell) policy. Surreal was just one of the adjectives amply used by my Pentagon source.
At the very least, according to this source, it was a missile. As to whether it was ours or theirs, he does not know. But he said “they do,” a reference to the brass. The rumors circulating “within the [Pentagon] rings” suggest that it was a deliberate launch of a missile from “Chinese property at sea” intended as a warning to the U.S. Although it was odd that he would not clarify the nature of the “Chinese property,” I can only assume that it did not originate from Catalina Island or U.S. military ships in the area, as we still own those, at least to my knowledge.
A domestic intelligence source speaking to me off the record acknowledged the event by his assurances that it was indeed “some type of large missile” and not an illusion or model rocket. This, according to information from his superiors, who are deeply rooted inside the beltway. He provided a lot of technical speak that amounted simply to this: the air traffic controllers were taken by surprise and clueless, there were no prior warnings of any scheduled military tests issued, and no one from the military has confided to his agency that “the missile” was ours and launched by mistake. In other words, it was not ours and it was no mistake.

Joooooooooooooooooooooooooz????
On a Chinese raft? They'll have an interesting time making a case for that.
This report has a ring of Stupid to it. But then the Chinese are known to do stupid things from time to time.
I am more inclined to not buying the whole "a missile from a Chinese property" stuff. It could more likely be a mistake on the part of US military. Somebody was making a missile they wanted to and still want to keep a secret and something went wrong and it fired. Just saying. That is way more likely than China going trigger-happy right now.
Nov 2007 ring any bells? American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.
By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.
According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.
The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

Submarines and firing missiles are two very different things.
Israeli Submarines popping up next to Iran is different than if Israel fired a missle over Iranian mainland. There's a difference people.
There's been plenty of incidents where submarines have come close to the border of enemy nations. Not a lot of incidents where China has fired missles over the US coast; or any other nation for that matter.
Firing missiles so close is an aggressive act, pulling up submarines right next to somebody's coast and within range is sissy tresspassing.
AA, far as I know missles don't usually just go off by accident because somebody leaned on the wrong button. Although I could certainly understand the military not wanting to own up if that is what happened.
It would be very unlikely to fire an ICBM by accident. Do we have any Muslims working in submarines? Al Quida did say they had something big for us next time.
China has to play by the same rules we have to play by, and that is, we'll fucking kill them if they even breathe on us in an aggressive manner.
This is one of those situations where it would be good if we actually had a Commander in Chief.
I'm not saying its an accident. WHat I am saying is that that is more likely than China firing off missiles. Missiles don't usually go off by accident and neither does China usually fire missliles over the US.
Besides this China info comes from a source that says there's a little bit of truth in all the conspiracy theories floating around about JFK assassination, 9/11 and others. I mean, I am just less prone to listening to crazies like that.
I do think there was a big mess-up with that missle, something that the military wasn't planning to do but happened and now they have no idea how to cover it so they're coming up with conflicting reports hoping it'd just go away. Sooner or later we'll know the facts, I believe and I also believe China (or Russia or Iran) won't be in the picture when the facts come out.
However, just like I think this guy's report might be wrong, I can be proven completely wrong too. But I am just saying, you know, not claiming that what I know comes from people that can lose their jobs for just talking to me and you just gotta take my word for whatever I say.
I ABSOLUTELY do not buy Chinese missile as some warning.
If it was the military would LEAK LIKE A SIEVE to ensure that the next admin will not be an OBAMA ADMIN.
For this to be Chinese, a (very noisy) Chinese SLBM would have to transit THE ENTIRE PACIFIC undetected, and then launch and remain undetected post launch.
That said, the 'contrail' explanations I have heard on TV are LAUGHABLE, a still from the KCBS video SHOWS A MISSILE.
Epam, do you have the link specifically for the still close-up? I heard about it on the radio but can't find anything except the long shots. Not only that, but there must have been other cameras out there -- are they showing any other photos other than the ones we've been seeing over and over?
Btw, one talk show caller today pointed out that if it is an ICBM and was launched from sea the launch platform would have to have been quite substantial or it would have sunk. (In the past I've encountered a scenario where it does just that, by intent.) Same person also pointed out the very steep trajectory, which would rule out an attack on LA. Where did the damn thing go, anyway?
Sean Osborne at NIN suggests it could be a pissed-off China's reply to our holding naval exercises off their coast. If the Chinese are that nuts, we've got a lot more to worry about than previously thought.
I'm a bit shy of the NIN site too, AA, which is why I'm just posting their stuff as suggestions. There is some real strange stuff on the rest of that site.
Um... folks, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sVmjpDZLN0&feature=related or google Missle test? Key West, FL new years eve 2008 in case I got the link wrong.
Looks practically identical. Anybody know what the 2008 one turned out to be?
And apparently a blogger in the LA area has been able to tie the video to a regular scheduled flight America West 808 which takes off about that time every evening. He's got a photo of last night's showing a very similar contrail.
Which would make for one less thing to worry about if it's true. Except for the fact that it had to be ID'd by a blogger -- not LAX, not the Pentagon, not the local news media. It really is starting to look like we rule the world.
