China offered Kyrgyz government $3 billion to close key U.S. airbase critical to AfPak

I wonder where they got that $3 billion from? Flip flops exported to the US?

This is the world. Money and power and intimidation in a perceived (by some) zero sum game. Obama fits well with this (!)

China's government tried to bribe the government of the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan with $3 billion if the Bishkek government would agree to close a strategic U.S. airbase there called Manas, a confidential State Department cable said.

The U.S. ambassador in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan confronted China's ambassador about the covert attempt. The Feb. 13, 2009, cable signed by Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller, revealed that Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Zhang Yannian "did not deny categorically" the covert cash offer to close the base, which is a major transit and refueling point for U.S. troops and supplies heading into northern Afghanistan.

"After opening pleasantries, the ambassador mentioned that Kyrgyz officials had told her that China had offered a $3 billion financial package to close Manas Air Base and asked for the ambassador's reaction to such an allegation," the cable stated.

"Visibly flustered, Zhang temporarily lost the ability to speak Russian and began spluttering in Chinese to the silent aide diligently taking notes right behind him.

Once he had recovered the power of Russian speech, he inveighed against such a calumny, claiming that such an idea was impossible, China was a staunch opponent of terrorism, and China's attitude toward Kyrgyzstan's decision to close Manas was one of 'respect and understanding.' "

The cable reveals China's efforts to undermine anti-terrorism efforts by the U.S.

Note that "anti-terrorism efforts by the U.S" equates directly and inarguably via historical fact to the safety of the american people at home. China is undermining efforts to make safe the american people at home. What is the proper policy for this?

The Chinese official also said several times during the meeting that a "revolution in China" is possible if the economy failed to improve and millions remain unemployed.

"In our experience, talk of revolution at home is taboo for Chinese," the cable said.

However, observers have noted that Chinese diplomats used similar language in meetings with U.S. officials as scare tactics, warning of a coming Chinese collapse as a way to stave off political pressure for democratic change.

I think this latest batch of info from the wikileaker is a blessing in disguise for America.

All that hopey-changey crap ain't workin' and neither is all the apologizing.

These cables rip the mask off of the sunshine and lollypops liberal worldview. And this worldview is fostered by bad people who use these liberal useful idiots as dupes to protest the cold-eyed realists who just want to go out and kill the bad guys.

Yes, these cables reveal the world as it really is: A dangerous, duplicitous place.

Of course, any serious conservative or libertarian could have told you that. It's only the naive liberals who are surprised.

China is not our friend or ally. In fact, it would not surprise me in the least if we somehow, someway, end up in a war, with China on the other side.

They are only a couple of notches down from North Korea.

Smile in our face and continue to stab us in our back when they are through.
For them, integrity only goes as far as the yen.
