Look, I know I was born with more good looks and charm than brains
however
I really do not understand the uproar over this one. I must be missing something.
The If You See Something Say Something schtick came out in the days after 9/11 when the government recognized everyone needed to be alert and vigilant in this new era. Too many were (still are) complacent had their heads in the clouds or up their asses or were just of the plain old I Don't Want To Get Involved attitude.
Sorry. It's National Security. YOUR National Security. You're involved, like it or not.
It was citizen vigilance and action that stopped Richard Reid & the Times Square bomber. A citizen tip (from his own father) that nailed the Portland Christmas Tree bomber.
So to get outraged over this now, because it's coming from the Left instead of the Right, seems a bit disingeuous and downright silly to me. Sure, putting up posters would have been alot cheaper but it's the message that needs to get out. Too many are still asleep at the switch.
Could this be abused? Absolutely. So it is also our responsibility to see that it isn't.
Unless, of course, we'd rather advocate If You See Something Keep It To Yourself.
Decide for yourself but I say if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. Or you end up as roadkill.

BIG SIS INVADES WAL-MART: 'IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING'
WASHINGTON -- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced the expansion of the Department’s national “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign to hundreds of Walmart stores across the country—launching a new partnership between DHS and Walmart to help the American public play an active role in ensuring the safety and security of our nation.
“Homeland security starts with hometown security, and each of us plays a critical role in keeping our country and communities safe,” said Secretary Napolitano. “I applaud Walmart for joining the ‘If You See Something, Say Something’ campaign. This partnership will help millions of shoppers across the nation identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to law enforcement authorities.”
The “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign—originally implemented by New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and funded, in part, by $13 million from DHS’ Transit Security Grant Program—is a simple and effective program to engage the public and key frontline employees to identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to the proper transportation and law enforcement authorities.
More than 230 Walmart stores nationwide launched the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign today, with a total of 588 Walmart stores in 27 states joining in the coming weeks. A short video message, available here, will play at select checkout locations to remind shoppers to contact local law enforcement to report suspicious activity.
Over the past five months, DHS has worked with its federal, state, local and private sector partners, as well as the Department of Justice, to expand the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign and Nationwide SAR Initiative to communities throughout the country—including the recent state-wide expansions of the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign across Minnesota and New Jersey. Partners include the Mall of America, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Amtrak, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, sports and general aviation industries, and state and local fusion centers across the country.
In the coming months, the Department will continue to expand the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign nationally with public education materials and outreach tools designed to help America’s businesses, communities and citizens remain vigilant and play an active role in keeping the county safe.

Hi Midnight.
As i said before this reminded me right away of the East German Stasy ,people spying on one another.I can't say i like the idea.
Between 1950 and 1989, the Stasi employed a total of 274,000 persons in an effort to root out the class enemy. How many will they employ in the USA?
Hi Will
I did get your email after I posted this.
On this one I have to disagree with you. Idon't think that's what this is about.
It's not Walmart employees being enlisted here. They wil be putting these TeeVees up for customers to see playing the short message. I still think they could do it just as well with posters (we had them where I used to work for years) reminding them to be vigilant. Someone acting suspicious say something. See an unattended box with white powder spilling out, say something. I don't see the danger in that. I do see the danger in ignoring something like that.
People should be vigilant all the time anyway for their own safety just from common thugs but so many aren't.
America's a big place and we can't have (nor would we want) cops everywhere. If you believe this to be a bad idea what might you suggest if not See Something Say Something? Certainly you wouldn't advocate ignoring it, would you?
Hi Midnight.
No off course i wouldn't be against being vigilant ,but that's not what i see as their goal.
I hope i'm wrong but too much points in another direction.Next someone wearing a Don't tread on me T -shirt might be considered a domestic terrorist ,like people who opt out of the scans by the TSA are being considered domestic terrorists.I see something completely different unfolding here.
I see your point and I hope you're wrong as well.
:)
It sucks about as much as it can when you have to be vigilant for the bad guys and be vigilant or your country being vigilant.
i'm with will on this one-a slippery step toward 1984 ---the dark side always presents an innocuous initial step of "encouraging" citizens to "observe" their fellow citizens...
if you trust the government - fine-i do not..
C-
MR-things got out of hand on this one-
man 'observed' carrying gun--police called-panic- man murdered -call it what you will.

If you believe the ultimate goal of the progressives is to take over our lives this is 1984
If you believe they'd like to push the lines but are more concerned with our safety this is troubling but then we need to have sunset provisions.
