A man with a knife attacked three French military personnel on an anti-terror patrol near a Jewish community center in southern France, officials said Tuesday. Two of the military personnel were wounded in the assault in the resort city of Nice.
The Nice Police Department told NBC News that a suspect has been arrested and that the attacker’s motive is not yet known.
A justice department investigation has been launched into the attack, police added.
Nice mayor Christian Estrosi used his Twitter feed to thank the “brave” citizens and transit workers who helped in the arrest.
Sarah Baron, a union official, told The Associated Press that two other people with the attacker fled the scene, outside a building used by the Consistoire IsraƩlite de Nice, a Jewish organization.From the Daily Mail:
Three soldiers on an anti-terror patrol outside a Jewish community centre in Nice on the French Riviera have been attacked by a man with a knife.
The attacker is believed to be a man named Moussa Coulibaly, the same surname as the gunman who murdered a policewoman and four hostages in a Kosher deli in Paris last month.
The knifeman, said to be in his 30s, pulled an eight-inch blade out of a bag and attacked the soldiers, injuring two in the face and the third in the arm.
The attacker, who was carrying an ID card with the name Moussa Coulibaly, was detained after the attack, near the Galeries Lafayette department store, Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said.
