Asra Nomani, in an interview with Bill Maher, recently said that she’s a “Liberal, Feminist Muslim”. She also claimed that there is an “ideology” in Islam that is violent and basically insinuated that Saudi Arabia is more or less responsible for creating that ideology.
Here’s my thoughts on it.
First of all, what the heck does it mean to be a “Feminist Muslim”? What is that? It makes absolutely no logical sense because Muslim/Islam is not like Judaism where you can be an “Atheist Jew”. Its more like Christianity where its impossible to be an “Atheist Christian”. Similarly, its impossible for one to be a “feminist Muslim”.
I can try and understand that Nomani may be less of a threat because she believes that there is an “ideology” of Islam that is violent and it needs to change. But the fundamental problem with her is that she thinks she can separate Islam from the violence that it promotes.
But that isn’t going to go anywhere. She is not the first one to bring it up either, read up on the Mutazillat/Mutazillah. They are the first known, true moderate Muslims who were on the right track where they tried to make the Quran be seen as non-eternal. They also said that the Quran should not determine what is good or evil but changing times; that the Quran should be interpreted with logic and reasoning (Greek, aka, Western ideas that they incorporated into their thought).
Nomani says “moderate Muslims are in jail”. No, you don’t have moderate Muslims. You have apologists of Islam who try to make Islam look good to the West by outright denying that there’s anything inherently wrong with it. Mutazillat were moderate Muslims and the last of them died in the dungeons of Al Azhar university.
This so-called “moderate Muslim/liberal Muslim/feminist Muslim” movement will never go anywhere. These people will come and go but Islam and majority of the Muslims will remain the same because no one wants to actually reform Islam.
Change the damn Quran. Or make it irrelevant. Otherwise you will never be able to eradicate the craziness in it because no, you didn’t get stuck in the 7th century because of some strange ideology that came out of Saudi Arabia. You have no recourse to get out of the 7th century because the Quran does not provide a way for anyone to get out.
The moment you decide to be a Muslim or are born into Islam is the moment you are walled in. The only way out is to leave Islam. And when you do that, get ready to watch over your shoulder for the rest of your life because, after all, “Islam is a religion of peace”. /sarc
