Having a hard time figuring out where this accident took place. The McCain was supposed to be traveling from the South China Sea to Singapore but reports place it in the Malacca straight which is on the west side of the island. Does not make sense.

IF they were in the Singapore Straight I can tell you from personal US Naval experience that sea traffic there can be very dense. Look at a Google satellite Map of the Singapore Straight and you will see what I mean.

Time was early morning local perhaps before sunrise and weather conditions unknown but radar should have made this no problem. EXCEPT, very important, ships that size can not stop or turn on a dime and there may be almost no room to maneuver between the fathom curve and the local traffic.

Could well have been caused entirely by the tanker.

Yep. But this incident's proximity to the one in June has me wondering.

A blog discussing the McCain shipping disaster from experienced Naval perspective (lots of good experience) reminds us:

Just this year:
- FEB, USS Antietam ran aground.
- JUN, USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant off Japan.
- AUG, USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant off Singapore.

In May, San Diego based USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) ran over a S. Korean fishing vessel.
