North Korea was struck by as many as two strong tremors on Sunday, with the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff saying it was presumed to be a sixth nuclear test.
Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono later said in a briefing broadcast by NHK that it concluded the tremors were a nuclear explosion.
Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said during the broadcast that Japan had sent at least three military jets to test for radiation.
"By way of the embassy in Beijing, we made it clear in the strongest words, that if this is a nuclear test, this is unforgivable, and a violation of the U.N. Security Council Resolution," Kono said, according to a CNBC translation.
North Korean television later said the reclusive country's leader, Kim Jong Un, had ordered a test of a hydrogen bomb intended to be mounted on an ICBM, Reuters reported.
North Korea called the test a complete success, with a greater yield than previous tests and no adverse impact on the environment, Reuters reported, citing the television report.
A hydrogen bomb is much more powerful than the simpler types of atomic weapons tested by North Korea five times previously, or the bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. H-bombs are also harder to develop.
The USGS initially reported a first tremor as a 5.6 magnitude, but later raised it to 6.3, while China's earthquake administration said it detected a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Northeastern North Korea, calling it a "suspected explosion," Reuters reported.
So, NOW, if North Korea shoots a "missile over Japan", will Trump respond? Or are we just going to threaten?

I'm watching the morning news on cable. Talking head after talking head is minimizing the threat from NK.
"What are KJU's demands? Is there any way to meet them?"
Huh?
"Short of reunifying the Korean Peninsula, nothing else will satisfy KJU."
[head/desk] Is that even NEGOTIABLE?
Now, here is my question:
How long has KJU made threats that he had no way of executing?
Let us remember that KJU is not his father.
What have the nuclear-material sniffers determined?
There are other states involved in KJU's aggression and aspirations against America. That is what makes this complex. He is not a solitary actor, and we should remember that little fact.
I wonder what Israel would do in our situation.
There is no waiting on this.
Trump MUST do something.
TLEP opined:
He is not a solitary actor.
Agreed.
And for that very reason, doing nothing is not an option.
The rest of the cabal will be emboldened if Trump does nothing.
And the anniversary of 9/11 looms. Numerology, anyone?
Trump's Tweet about 5 minutes ago:
I will be meeting General Kelly, General Mattis and other military leaders at the White House to discuss North Korea. Thank you.
Talking, of course, is not action.
I don't believe NK could get a missile here that we couldn't shoot down. We were tasked with shooting down thousands of them during the cold war with Russia.
Kid,
Maybe you know something I don't know.
So, here are my questions:
1) If we can shoot missiles down, then why didn't we shoot down the one that was fired AT Japan the other day?
2) Oh, you say it wasn't fired at Japan? It was fired OVER Japan? Really? How did you or anyone else know the trajectory BEFORE it was time to blow it out of the sky?
3) Did we know there was NOT a NUKE on the missile NoKo fired AT Japan?
4) If we did not know, then should not that missile have been considered AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT????????????
Certainly we should be shooting them all down imo.
Some information that I'm not privy to may be the reason we are not. I'd like to think the end game is to take care of this anus on the face of the Earth once and for all.
.. meaning a little pain is worth the forever gain. The USA has killed its own citizens for less.
Then also, Japan and S Korea may have some say so. ?
