Black Muslim in Philly attacks another black, while nobody tried to stop him

This news came in just two days ago (via Debbie Schlussel). It was caught on videotape and here are 2 videos of it, where the attacker can even be heard screaming out "Allah":

Now this is abominable alright, and also disturbing is that the attacker brought along a young boy who may have been his son. But what's really disgusting is that the passengers - and there were at least 10 on the subway train car when it happened - did absolutely nothing to stop the foul lubricant from perpetrating his assault on an innocent man.

The criminal has fortunately been found and arrested (also via Debbie):
Thomas Scantling, 26, of Philadelphia, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and related charges, police said.

Scantling, who was taken into custody in a mental institution late Tuesday, has a lengthy record of rape and other convictions, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said on NBC's "Today."
But again, that does not excuse how the passengers stood by and/or fled when this took place. The police commisioner agrees:
Ramsey criticized other riders for standing by when the assailant entered the train with his 5-year-old son, directed the boy to a seat, calmly pulled a hammer from a backpack and attacked a man dozing in a nearby seat.

At least 10 other riders were in the car, yet no one interfered as the attacker repeatedly struck the victim in the train car and later out on a platform, Ramsey said on "Today."

"They better pray they're never a victim, because if someone was attacking them that way they would certainly hope someone would step forward and help, and it starts with stepping forward and doing something yourself," Ramsey said.
This brings forward something that should concern all Americans AND Europeans who abhor violence like this: there have been quite a few cases in history a la Kitty Genovese, where passers-by did absolutely nothing to help victims of violence who were attacked in their very vicinity. How are crimes like these to be prevented if noone is willing to run to the victims' help when they're attacked? And the AP isn't helping by sugarcoating the details about Islam, as they are. They too should be ashamed for similar reasons.

If you are witness to an act of aggravated assault in your direct vicinity, I think it would help tremendously if you were to run to the victim's help, and not be afraid of getting injured yourself. If you have a stick or any other weapon that would come in useful, use it to stop the violence-monger too. But don't just sit around idly while a defenseless man/woman/child is being violently victimized. Do something, whatever you can, to prevent the situation's becoming worse.
