French Government Funds Mosques

The French people overwhelmingly reject the notion of the government funding Mosque-builing, but the government continues on with the policy anyway.

A recent item in Le Figaro discussed thefinancing of mosques with public funds. According to the article, 30% of the total cost of the mosques is supplied by French taxpayers. Le Figaro then sponsored a poll to see if the French approved of the practice. The voting is now over, 19,768 persons having participated. The results:

Yes - 14.02%

No - 85.98%

There seems to be little doubt as to public sentiment on this issue. The interesting thing is the way the French government no longer even tries to hide the fact that it is using public funds, in violation of the 1905 law separating Church and State, in which it is clearly stated that no government money shall be used for new religious constructions.
