Russia's GRU spetsnaz special operations forces are considering a request from the U.S. military to conduct joint training with U.S. special operations forces in a Central Asian state, according to a recent Russian press report.

The Argumenty Nedeli Online, a publication begun by journalists whose reports are often critical of the Moscow government, reported that the Russian general staff is considering the joint training request that would involve exercises in a Central Asian state that would resemble the harsh terrain in Afghanistan.

The report said the request for cooperation with the Russians is a sign that U.S. special forces "seem finally to have admitted defeat."

The Obama administration has set a date of July 2011 as the start of withdrawal of conventional troops from Afghanistan including the additional 30,000 troops sent as part of a surge.

The report said the joint training request appears designed to coax the Russians into playing a greater role in Afghan stability and security.

The report quoted a U.S. source close to the special operations command to hold joint training with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division with GRU troops.

"The Russian side is presently considering this question. Each of the sides has a definite training system, and it is frequently stamped ' Top Secret.' But the American 'mountaineers' (this is what the servicemen of the 10th Mountain Division are called) clearly lack experience of conducting special operations under such conditions. The Russian spetsnaz do have this experience, accumulated during the war in Afghanistan back in the last century," the source said.

The training would be held in Gornyy Badakhshan, a remote part of Tajikistan.

Jimmy Carter on crack, people. Kumbaya !
