And his aftershave smells like citrus:Britain's top soldier says al-Qaeda cannot be beaten (?)

Telegraph UK:

The new head of Britain's armed forces, Gen Sir David Richards, has warned that the West cannot defeat al-Qaeda and militant Islam.

(epaminondas says, 'if Winnie was around we'd hear a few Donald Trump words')

9:30PM GMT

He said defeating Islamist militancy was "unnecessary and would never be achieved".

However, he argued that it could be "contained" to allow Britons to lead secure lives

AND HERE IS AN ASTONISHING REMARK...

The general, who will tomorrow lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall in memory of Britain's war dead, said the West's war against what he described as a "pernicious ideology" had parallels with the fight against Nazi Germany in the Second World War

It's like fighting the Nazis, EXCEPT WE CANNOT WIN?

He's right, of course. To restate the bullet points of separationism:

-Islam is a mortal threat to our civilization.

-But we cannot destroy Islam.

-Nor can we democratize Islam.

-Nor can we assimilate Islam.

-Therefore the only way to make ourselves safe from Islam is to separate ourselves from Islam.

Or in practical terms, stop Muslim immigration now and start the deportations.

There is no chance of "winning" in Afghanistan. Not if "winning" entails miraculously turning the country into a liberal, secular, tolerant democracy friendly to the West. It will never happen, period.

So what exactly are we fighting for over there? Well, right now our strategy is to prop up the world's most corrupt regime, where billions of dollars in foreign aid are routinely stolen, some of which is funneled back to the Taliban. A regime mainly consisting of warlords, jihadists, heroin dealers and other assorted criminals. A regime that enshrines Sharia as the law of the land, so that apostates, adulterers and homosexuals face capital punishment.

These are the "allies" that we've sacrificed the lives of thousands of coalition soldiers for. Not to mention the tens of thousands of critically wounded soldiers and the hundreds of billions of dollars spent so far, with no end in sight.

You want a realistic solution to the Afghan problem? Arm and train the population, then seal the borders. Problem solved.

You want a realistic solution to the worldwide Islamist militancy problem? To repeat myself, stop Muslim immigration now and start the deportations. Everything else is a waste of time, money and lives.

I agree with Jeppo 100%. Gen Sir David Richards is just speaking CommonSense.

He said that Al-Queda cannot be beat. he's right, they are living amongst us, everywhere, in the world. They can be contained however.

There's no where to do it the American way - going in with guns blazing.

Separation is a DREAM.

THIS

IS

WAR

There are TWO possible outcomes.
The other side will allow NO OTHER RECKONING.

So sorry, why is this not yet clear?

Richards is a moron and strategically BLIND

I completely disagree with Jeppo the Canadian and Ray the Brit.

There must be something wrong in your hearts and minds, you members of the Commonwealth.

Your Kingdom did not get where it was by being a bunch of defeatist pussies.

Then again, America did not get where we are by being what we are today, either.

@pasto

Nobodies being a defeated pussie here. I think you are misreading. Jeppo said:

"But we cannot destroy Islam.

It is commonsense to say the above. They are amongst us. No democratic government is going to do what should be done.

The Americans could not defeat the vietcong because they were amongst the population. Thousands of American lives needlessly lost.

The Americans (and Brits) cannot defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan for the same reasons as above. Best to leave now and let them, the Afghans suffer the consequences. The majority support the taliban. Fuck them.

Al Queda are worldwide and living in our own countries. Root them out, contain them but defeat them? it's like cutting off the heads of daisy's, next day they are back.

As jeppo said separation, stop immigration, start deportation, sealing of borders. Quarantine the muslim world.

It's not being a pussy it's being pragmatic. On the other hand going in with guns is the easy way but is bound to fail just as the Vietnam war failed. Learn from history. This is NOT like fighting the Germans 70 years ago - well at least the Brits were!!!

He didn't saying defeating Islam.

He said we can't defeat the Taliban.

The General is not willing to do or think as he has to do and think in order to be a General.

And, he is a liar, cuz he knows we could win if we wanted to do what we have to do.

As someone who organized protests against eh war in vietnam allow me to point something out ..
THIS IS BULL
"The Americans could not defeat the vietcong because they were amongst the population. Thousands of American lives needlessly lost."

We made a judgment that what it took to win was not worth the cost. The VC were NEVER a threat t Manhattan, the Pentagon, Times Square, Airliners or our way of life.

The ascendant for of Islam IS such a threat.

All force must be brought to bear on the enemy.

There will be no separation allowed by them.

There have an individual responsibility to ensure that it is GOD'S AUTHORITY which is sovereign and not the people's.

Separation is mutually exclusive with this.

Sooner or later it has to come.

Richards is an idiot. He is Balwdin, the Vicar in a uniform.

Bill Maher compared America’s grasp of complex issues to that of a dog. “America is like a dog,” Maher began, explaining “It cannot understand actual words. It understands inflection, it understands fear, but you can’t actually explain issues to a dog.”

That seems to sum up this issue.

Not enough people on this thread have taken the trouble to properly read what has been said in comments.

I have talked separation. I say contain, deport and quarantine but I say fighting in Afghanistan is a no win situation just like Vietnam and is not worth the life of any more of our boys.

Epaminondas said...

Separation as an idea is a chimera, Ray. Wahabbis and Khomeinists cannot be contained. Deportation is NEVER going to occur, NOT HERE. It is ILLEGAL.

I wonder if you'd feel the same way if St Paul's and Parliament were huge holes in the ground, and Birdcage Walk a smear. Or if the Albert & Victoria had seen the death of everyone there during christmas week, and the culprits coddled and held up by some foreign nation as relgious exemplars deserving of protection for their godliness.

Not only are we not dogs, but I'm sorry to say that YOUR way of nuanced application of effort has already been tried. The problem is not that we drooling americans do not understand complex issues, but that we understand them all to well.

There is an enemy and he must be destroyed for our way of life to survive.

In the end, so long as we have the right president, if the Afghans - whose govt today called for PROTECTION OF THE TALIBAN FROM AMERICAN DRONES - compel upon us a campaign of horror from 20,000 feet, then that is how it will end up.

England, as can be seen, is apparently TOO CIVILIZED AND AWARE OF COMPLEXITIES OF SOCIAL NUANCE, for us snot driveling, unabrowed, mutts ... but WE are NOT TOO CIVILIZED TO SURVIVE.
