Deputy Chairman of the European Council for Fatwa and Research said Jews and Christians "disgraced themselves and their dhimmi covenant by distorting what Allah sent"

From Jihad Watch:

Islamic teachings appropriate almost every major religious figure in Judaism and Christianity and recast them as prophets and messengers of Islam. Therefore, when a spokesperson tells you Muslims follow Abraham, Moses, and Jesus and believe in the Torah (Taurat) and Gospel (Injil), they mean the unspoiled, Islamically correct copies they believe existed before Jews and Christians allegedly falsified them to remove references to the coming of Muhammad, and to insert non-Islamic ideas like, for example, John 3:16.

Never mind the herculean task it would have been to purge the entire planet of those supposed Islamically correct Torahs and Gospels. Just getting the word out to the Jewish diaspora and far-flung Christian communities would have been well nigh impossible. Ensuring compliance, and that no one would hang onto an original out of piety, or just because it would become a really cool collector's item would be daunting. Quality control would be a nightmare, if one wished to ensure the Torahs and Gospels were tampered with in exactly the same way, rather than allowing innumerable WikiTorahs and WikiGospels to emerge, unrecognizable from one community's edit to the next.

Lastly, why would otherwise observant, pious readers of their scriptures single out Muhammad to conspire against before his inevitable coming, as those scriptures supposedly foretold?

Nonetheless, this wildly revisionist account is taken in the Muslim world as, well, the gospel truth, and used to justify the violent persecution of non-Muslims. And here, we have a high-ranking member of a European fatwa committee openly endorsing that same narrative.
Hmm. Shaykh Faysal al-Mawlawi must not be a "moderate." "Fatwa: 'The People of the Book Disgraced (Themselves) and Their Dhimmi Covenant by Distorting What (Allah) Sent'," from Translating Jihad, February 9:

This fatwa comes from Shaykh Faysal al-Mawlawi, the Deputy Chairman of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, and is posted on IslamOnline.net. Here Shaykh al-Mawlawi explains that only the Qur'an has been preserved and protected by Allah, whereas the Bible has been corrupted and distorted by the Jews and Christians. He further argues that one reason for the Jews and Christians doing this was to wipe out all reference to Muhammad in the Bible, which Muslims often claim was originally in there.
