Obama announces U.S. pullout from Iraq

All American forces will leave the country by the end of the year, the White House said today.

What is a Pyrrhic Victory?

A Pyrrhic victory is a victory with such a devastating cost to the victor that it carries the implication that another such victory will ultimately cause defeat.

We accomplished nothing.

And, that is not Obama's fault. It is George Bush's fault.

The Iraq War joins the Viet Nam War as the most futile effort in the history of the United States of America.

It's enough to turn a war-monger like me into a Pacifist.

Iran was the logical next target after Afghanistan, not Iraq. Poor target selection.

When the US first started the Iraq war, I was one of those vociferous anti-war doves, not because I am a dove, or anti-war but because I knew Iraq, Islam and history. My argument was very simple, Sadam was a tyrant who kept the lid on a pressure cooker. He was secular until the first gulf war when the Islamist were the only support he could find. If all American troops leave this year it will be a guarantee that Obama will lose the 2012 elections. Within six months the shit will hit the fan again or even worse, they will ally with Iran and all those yelling now for the troops to leave will yell "why did you send them home". They will never blame their own shortsightedness or stupidity, they cannot blame the Republicans who were against it, the only one left to blame will be Obama. They say hell has no fury like a women scorned, that's wrong, nowhere nearly as bad as the fury of leftist proven completely wrong.

Well said, my sentiments exactly. Looking back, the first Persian Gulf War in 1991 was the template of how America should fight wars in the future, which later became known as the Powell Doctrine:

1) Have a clearly defined objective (freeing Kuwait).

2) Go in with overwhelming force (500,000 troops).

3) When the objective has been achieved, get out ASAP.

There were only about 150 American fatalities from that war, and the troops came home to a huge ticker-tape parade in Manhattan. Those were the days.

Yes, Saddam remained in power afterwards, but he was a useful bulwark against Iran and radical Islamists in general. Now that he's gone, Iran and al Qaeda, both far more dangerous enemies than Saddam ever was, have been empowered. So after 8.5 years of war, thousands of dead soldiers, tens of thousands more critically injured, and hundreds of billions of dollars spent, the US is in a worse strategic position in the Gulf than when it began.

The good news is that Obama is finally pulling the plug on Bush's fiasco.

I AGREE.

I say: Hmm. I wonder if that is true. It's already really, really bad in Iraq. For Christians it is far worse than it was under Saddam.

I say: Yep. Obama has done some good stuff lately.

1) kill Osama

2) Kill Awlaki

3) kill Gadaffi

4) end Iraq War.
