UPDATE - This story, from KTLA News Lost Angeles, would seem to indicate that the car accident was just that; an car ACCIDENT:
The solo-vehicle crash happened near the intersection of Highland and Melrose avenues around 4:15 a.m., according to the LAPD.
Hastings’ Mercedes-Benz slammed into a tree and caught fire.
“I was just coming northbound on Highland and I seen a car going really fast, and all of a sudden I seen it jackknife,” said Luis Cortez, who witnessed the wreck.
“I just seen parts fly everywhere and I slammed on my brakes and stopped and tried to call 911,” Cortez added.
The engine of the vehicle was found in a yard about 100 feet away.
Friends said that, because of the nature of Hastings’ work, he often led a very paranoid lifestyle.
“A lot of his friends were worried that he was in a very agitated state, yes. No question, people were concerned,” said Cenk Uygur, host of “The Young Turks.”
“He was incredibly tense and very worried and was concerned that the government was looking in on his material,” he said.
“I don’t know what his state of mind was at 4:30 in the morning, but I do know what his state of mind was in general, and it was a nervous wreck.”

Pastorius telephoned me and requested that I post the information here at IBA (thanks to Will of MFS - The Other News for emailing me the link below)...
Another critic of Obama administration, liberal writer Michael Hastings, 33, killed on Los Angeles street 15-months after Andrew Breitbart:
A liberal critic of the Obama Administration, writer, Michael Hastings, 33, was killed in an automobile accident early this morning in Los Angeles.Nothing weird, right?
[...]
He rocketed to instant fame when his piece in Rolling Stone brought down Stanley McChrystal, the top-ranking general in Afghanistan, in 2010. Since then, Hastings was a regular presence in print and on television, a frequent critic of the Obama administration and an aggressive and enthusiastic debater. In recent years, the war correspondent had turned his focus to domestic politics, bringing the same independent spirit to the campaign trail....
Hold on a second.
Pasto heard on the radio a few minutes ago that those who heard the crash said that they thought that a bomb had gone off. Furthermore, these observers noted that the car's engine flew some 60 feet.
The vehicle that Hastings was driving was a Mercedes. Since when does a Mercedes disintegrate like that? Especially in a single-vehicle accident.

First Breitbart, not this dude.
Getting rid of those who oppose you.
Guess what America...this is what happens when you elect mobsters/terrorist sympathizers to rule over you.
"NOW* this dude", not "not this dude".
Nico,
We should expect for more of Obama's foes to meet untimely demise. Opposition must be silenced!
The real problem is that since the NSA is collecting metadata (among other things), this includes your GPS data from your cell phone.
Therefore while you may be wrong, you are on the 'safe' side of paranoia and among the real possibilities.
This is what happens when trust is lost.
NO one can CERTIFY the border is secure because no one believes the certification.
No can negotiate a treaty which as Obama said today will knock another 33% off the nuclear deterrent, because no one believes the deterrent posture of the USA.
No one can leave Afghanistan in a real situation of any sort of believable reality because no one believes the american govt.
Reasonable people start to wonder if the govt would actually consider surreptitiously getting rid of its opponents because lie after lie after, breach of the bill of rights after breach has destroyed the faith of too many people in those elected.
I don't think Obama killed Hastings. But I would NOT be stupefied if one day objective evidence emerges that he was murdered.
They pretend to pay us, we pretend to work.
THAT was the real death knell of the USSR
Speaking about government official lies:
1996 TWA Flight 800 crash not due to gas tank explosion, former investigators say
The producers of an upcoming documentary on TWA Flight 800—which exploded and crashed into the waters off Long Island, N.Y., on July 17, 1996, killing all 230 people on board—claim to have proof that a missile caused the Paris-bound flight to crash. And six former investigators who took part in the film say there was a cover-up and want the case reopened.
*****
One detail overlooked about this flight:
Up until Jan. 1995, Flight 800 was a scheduled flight connecting to Tel Aviv through stop @ Paris.
Simultaneous to this event, Clinton was struggling with Bosnian War.
via pri.org
"Clinton: "About an hour ago I spoke with Secretary Christopher in Dayton, Ohio. He informed me that the presidents of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia have reached a peace agreement to end the war in Bosnia."
Sharp: It was a huge turnaround. Just a few months before, the Clinton Administration had been mired in indecision over Bosnia. Bill Clinton had campaigned for president on promises of stronger action, but when he came into office he did nothing. But the pressure was building steadily. The evidence of atrocities was irrefutable. European policy was a failure. U.N. initiatives were ineffective. Key State Department officials had resigned in protest at American inaction.
Daalder: "At one point, the National Security Advisor Tony Lake went in to see the president, President Clinton, and said there's a cancer on the presidency."
Sharp: Ivo Daalder is the author of "Getting to Dayton: The Making of America's Bosnia Policy."
Daalder: "Saying that Bosnia was this cancer, that if we didn't find a way to resolve Bosnia, this would be an issue in the 1996 election."
Sharp: That argument worked on President Clinton. His aides began devising a new strategy.
While I don't think Obama himself murdered the guy...I do find it suspicious that people who are critical of Obama and his minions end up dead at an early age.
Reminds me of the Russians and Alexander Litvinenko (and others like him).
I hate conspiracy theories.
On the other hand, I can't forget about THIS: "No Answers in Death of Technician Linked to Andrew Breitbart."
Epa,
To be clear, I didn't ask AOW to post this because I think Obama is involved.
But then you conclude your comment saying, you would be surprised to find the man was murdered.
If that news report I heard (on KFI Los Angeles, a Clear Channel Station with news produced by Fox News) is true, then what other conclusion is there?
Have you ever heard of a engine flying 60 feet through the air because of a collision?
That's Indy Car stuff, maybe, but not Mercedes.
AOW,
EXACTLY!
Just to clarify, Pasto -- Epa said he did not believe the man was murdered but would NOT (his caps) be stupefied otherwise.
I have heard of an engine flying that far. Friend of my cousin hit a bridge abutment with his Bronco (not broncobama) a number of years ago. Engine flew 100 ft plus. Car exploded. The only reason he survived was because he was NOT wearing a seat belt and was thrown clear of the vehicle.
That doesn't mean I believe that's what happened here. Only that the explanation does have plausibility.
All that said, I don't find much of a leap that he was murdered, or could have been. A few years ago I might have said whoa whoa whoa but not now, and especially after revelations of the last few weeks and today, the FBI admitting it uses drones over America for surveillance. They say unarmed but then Clapper also said they don't eavesdrop on American citizens.
If this is what they are admitting to then the truth is much much worse. And silencing your enemies is not a big stretch at all. It is the Chicago way.
Hi MR,
I just got home and have finally had time to sift through the news and I found an article (posted here now) indicating it really is an accident.
The engine really did fly loose of the car, and travel 100 feet through the air.
But witness accounts say it was due to an accident, because the driver lost control as he was driving at a very high rate of speed.
His friends say he had been agitated and paranoid recently.
Hastings had been agitated and paranoid recently? Was that a norm for him?
Was driving like a bat out of hell a norm for him?
It was his car, but he has not as yet been positively identified, the body is burned beyond recognition. the coroner thinks it may take a few weeks for to autopsy to be completed. Mercedes is of course well known to disintegrate and burst into flames whenever to hit a tree, all that "safest car in a crash" is just propaganda.
we are starting to find
evidence
that he was murdered
'agitated and paranoid recently' that describes HOW MANY AMERICANS?
btw the way the point I was trying to make is that in NORMAL times this would be dismissed as the loon fantasies of those whose lives would improve with liberal amounts of thorazine.
But we JUST CAN'T GO THAT FAR anymore. We HAVE to at least consider the outrageous and otherwise paranoid.
HAVE TO
Yes but may we still have the liberal amounts of Thorazine?
Being an investigative reporter, he must have had enough evidence and reason to be paranoid and agitated. Yes, it may be an accident, but also someone might have done something to the car for the guy to lose control. Is there any info as to where he was before the accident?
It was sure an awful way to die. But worst of all is the fact that the first thing that came to mind was to suspect the government. Unbelievable! This is, or was, the USA!!!
'But worst of all is the fact that the first thing that came to mind was to suspect the government.'
My life's experience has been almost without exception is that when I am thinking I am being paranoid, usually the problem is that I have not been paranoid enuf. As I found to my sorrow and regret.
After taking a close look at the photo's some obvious inconsistencies made me think maybe it could have been more than an accident with a tree. The first thing I noticed was the gas tank is lying on the ground behind the car and still appears to be in the condition you would expect to see if it were still attached to the car, also the passenger side front fender appears to be gone completely not consistent with a front end collision at all because of the unibody construction that utilizes these areas to absorb the shock of an impact reducing blunt forces of impact. The same was true on the drivers side as well just gone. The fender supports on both sides were pointing out in different directions and the hood was also gone. In many cars it is not uncommon for an engine to be ejected with front impacts, which it is designed to do to prevent it from coming back through the firewall into the passenger compartment, but in this case it did seem a very long distance from the vehicle and the debris field was not confined to one direction but if you look at the photos you will notice debris were disbursed in all directions including the sides and back of the vehicle which would be more consitant with some type of explosion reather than an impact with a stationary object which would send most debris forward not backwards or sideways...? We may never know.

Abstract
—Modern automobiles are no longer mere mechanical devices; they are pervasively monitored and controlled by dozens of digital computers coordinated via internal vehicular networks. While this transformation has driven major advancements in efficiency and safety, it has also introduced a range of new potential risks. In this paper we experimentally evaluate these issues on a modern automobile and demonstrate the fragility of the underlying system structure. demonstrate that an attacker who is able to infiltrate virtually any Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can leverage this ability to completely circumvent a broad array of safety-critical systems. Over a range of experiments, both in the lab and in road tests, we demonstrate the ability to adversarially control a wide range of automotive functions and completely ignore driver input — including disabling the brakes, selectively braking individual wheels on demand, stopping the engine, and so on. We find that it is possible to bypass rudimentary network security protections within the car, such as maliciously bridging between our car’s two internal subnets. We also present composite attacks that leverage individual weaknesses, including an attack that embeds malicious code in a car’s telematics unit and that will completely erase any evidence of its presence after a crash. Looking forward, we discuss the complex challenges in addressing these vulnerabilities while considering the existing automotive ecosystem.
