Just An Observation

Why does Aaron Alexis look so different in photos taken about a year apart?

The photo on the right supposedly was taken in 2010, the one on the left in 2011 (FBI poster):

President Obama vowed Monday to hold responsible those who carried out the 'cowardly' mass shooting, while calling the victims 'patriots'

Hmmmm......What no 'workplace violence'?

Maybe he had vitiligo and decided to darken his skin?

Pasto,
I wasn't thinking much about the skin tone.

Instead, I was referring to the bloat.

Also, I note a more benign facial expression in the photo on the left -- particularly the difference in the eyes. Now, perhaps that change in facial expression could be caused by participating in meditation. But if he was at peace, then why did he go on such a shooting rampage? Roid Rage, perhaps?

Different lighting for the camera is one factor. Notice the shadow patterns. On the lighter photo the shadow is only slightly visible directly behind his ears. The lighting in this photo appears to be directed from in front and above him - like the flash bulbs on older cameras.

On the darker photo, the shadow visibly extends behind his right ear which indicates light comes from above to his left (room type ceiling lighting - perhaps flourescent).

The camera lens also creates issues, creating illusions to different head shapes. The lighter image suggests a square skull shape, whereas the darker image suggests a distinctly more oblong/oval perhaps even thinner image.

digital photography & flourescent lighting

Light is the center of a photographer's skill, and yet, also the bane of his existence. Light means everything to a photo; the strength and color of light can add a warm rich tone to the image, or it can overpower the subject and completely ruin the picture. Therefore, a photographer must know that indoor fluorescent bulbs cast an ugly, sickly green color across everything around them.

AP: Officials: Gunman treated for mental health issues
U.S. law enforcement officials are telling The Associated Press that the Navy contractor identified as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder. He also had been hearing voices in his head, the officials said.
Aaron Alexis, 34, had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for his mental problems, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the criminal investigation in the case was continuing. The Navy had not declared him mentally unfit, which would have rescinded a security clearance that Alexis had from his earlier time in the Navy Reserves.
Family members told investigators that Alexis was being treated for his mental issues.

Ok, I'll be more serious this time.

Here's the difference: First picture he looks bigger, more "bloated" as you put it.

Second picture he looks slimmed down.

The significant difference is in the eyes. In the first photo, his eyes have an almond shape. In the second photo they are more "round."

That is odd.

they are not bug-eyed round, as if he had been using Meth, or whatever.

Sadly, I think the guy is just mentally ill. It would be nice to blame it on drugs, but I don't buy it. He does not look like a drug addict to me.

I am not sure these pix are the same x by y ratios.
For instance, if the original jpeg is displayed on a 4x3 screen (1280 x 1024 or higher or lower 4x3 ratio in those constraints) and then moved to a 16 x 9 such as 720p or 1080p or the reverse you get a horizontal distortion that would look like this, but might be more exagerrated

Just an example

Pasto,
The information that I've been reading on the web this evening points to Alexis having a serious mental illness -- that is, psychosis. Like you, I doubt that illegal drugs were involved.
