Tammy Swofford Commentary: "Jefferson in PRISM — I"

From the Daily Times Pakistan, Tammy Swofford reminds us of the dystopian dangers of absolute national security:
On May 25, 2013, the government very quietly removed an elderly gentleman from the sidewalk in front of the Independence Hall in Philadelphia. He had set up a small display with the original documents known as The Declaration of Independence and The United States Constitution. They rested on hand carved wooden easels on either side of the entrance to the building. Those who passed by were impressed by the genteel manner of the man. Perhaps more startling was the phrase that he kept repeating again and again: “Ignorance is preferable to error; and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong.”

As the white-haired gentleman hailed from a private estate known as Monticello, he was remanded to the custody of the Virginia State Police and is now housed at an undisclosed location. Although there is nearly a complete media embargo on the peculiarities of this arrest, small factoids about the case are finding their way into a network of underground reporters who have managed to evade the surveillance of the state. A profile and extensive dossier had previously been constructed by the NSA and CIA on this particular citizen. He possessed a powerful intellect and strong command of the English language. At an earlier date, he had been heavily recruited to join the growing ranks of his powerful analytical peers. His subsequent protest was categorised as one of imminent threat to the intelligence-gathering capabilities of the security apparatus.

Interestingly, the technology that has allowed for the NSA PRISM programme is the same technology that has diminished any real public support for the elderly man who quietly went about his work as a sentinel. A new generation feeds on a virtual reality inhabited by avatars and unpredictable friends. Technological advances have placed increasingly complex global networking capabilities within the hands of the masses. This seems like empowerment. But a more subtle side to the technology has been exposed. A public poll assessing interest in the aforementioned arrest determined that 45 percent of Americans polled had little concern for the man on the sidewalk. In fact, they believed that the PRISM programme should be expanded. The conclusion is self-evident. This technology used by the masses is nimble in its psychological enslavement capabilities. For the unaware, it captures and enslaves the intricate reasoning processes necessary to understand concepts such as human liberty, right to privacy, and protection from unlawful seizure. One of the white-haired gentleman’s jailers, a rather brave fellow by the name of Edward Snowden, agreed to smuggle some of the private papers of this man into an underground media network. These papers were stored on a flash drive that was hidden in the heel of his boot. He assured the jailer that a forensic sweep of his private papers from his laptop at home had already been accomplished on more than one occasion. As I bring this report to you, the status of the jailer is also unknown. He is no longer available for updates on the physical condition of the prisoner. But he is known to be in a weakened state. So today, I release to you a few of the thoughts of this prisoner, delivered to me in a parking garage in Dallas. These are his words. His name is Thomas Jefferson....

Mia Love: Speech at the Republican National Convention

"The first day of college my father came with me to orientation and I remember he looked at me. He looked at me very seriously and he said, "Mia, your mother and I have done everything to get you to where you are right now." We have never taken a hand out, we have worked hard for everything we have through personal responsibility. You will not be a burden to society. You will give back.

If I could describe Freedom in one word, it would be Agency. The ability to make decisions, and reap the benefits of those decisions, or suffer the consequences. 

If I could go to Washington tomorrow and change one thing, it would be to restore the power of the decision making back to the people. It is not government's responsibility to save our country. 

It's up to us to save our country.

  1. Lybia: Pro-reform newspaper suspended. The Libyan government has suspended printing of a newspaper controlled by a reformist son of leader Muammar Gaddafi, local media reported, in what could be the latest phase in a power struggle inside the oil exporting state. The newspaper had accused the Govt of not tackling corruption.
  2. UK: Al-Awlaki sermons influenced Muslim woman to stab British MP. Roshanara Choudhry, a 21-year-old student who has been jailed for life for trying to assassinate British MP Stephen Timms in May this year, told police she had wanted to die as a martyr after watching more than 100 hours of video sermons from the American-born extremist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki on the internet.
  3. Terror: Spy agencies have infiltrated AQ. The case of Rahman (an ex-GITMO who spied the Taliban and who was killed after they discovered it), which Shah (the Taliban spokeman) recounted to The Associated Press, falls in line with a key aspect of the fight against terror — Western intelligence agencies, with help from Islamic allies, are placing moles and informants inside al-Qaida and the Taliban. The program seems to be bearing fruit, even as many infiltrators like Rahman are discovered and killed.
  4. UK: Venezuelan embassy to commemorate intifada: The intifada was “at the forefront of the world struggle against white supremacist neo-colonialism and settler-colonialism,” according to the embassy.
  5. France: "youths" throw stones and pine cones at Catholics during All Souls' mass: 150 people attending the memorial service for the dead late Tuesday afternoon in a church in a sensitive area of Carcassonne, were victims of two teenagers (between 13 and 14 years),who, after entering the building, they began throwing stones and pine cones to the faithful. One person was hit. In addition, a statue of the Virgin, targeted by the young snatchers, was damaged.
  6. US: Vanderbilt radical professor denies Holocaust: Kaukab Siddique, associate professor of English at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, is an Islamic radical who demonizes Jews, mocks Holocaust victims and calls on Muslims to “liberate” Jerusalem.
  7. UK: Citizenship restored to cleric wanted on terrorism charges on the US: A British government ruling stripping the Egyptian-born Muslim cleric known as Abu Hamza al-Masri of his British citizenship was struck down Friday by a special immigration court. But government officials said the court’s action would not affect the government’s plan to extradite the cleric to the United States, where he is wanted on terrorism charges. Officials in the office of Home Secretary Theresa May said no decision had been made on whether to appeal the immigration court’s ruling to a higher British court.
  8. Germany: terrorist suspect arrested in Saarland region. The man demanded the release of an imprisoned member of the so-called Sauerland group which attempted to blow up US army bases in Germany in 2007.
  9. Kosovo: Headscarf ban sparks debate over country's identity: The government decided to forbid the wearing of headscarves in public schools late last year, in accordance with the constitution that declares Kosovo – which unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008 – a secular country. “The scarf in Kosovo is not an element of our identity. It’s a sign of submission of female to male, rather than a sign of choice“, Kosovo’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Vlora Citaku explains.
  10. "Islam not invasive": "retreat centers" for Christian converts from Islam in Malaysia: A two-hour journey from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur revealed an isolated encampment where some Christian converts say they’ve been taken in order to be forced back to Islam.
  11. Pakistan: Death toll in mosques' bombing over 70. The mosques belong to Ahmaddiya community. The death toll right now is of 95.
  12. Spain: "Extremist" imams' ideology blamed on "disorganized Islam", according to El País

"We can say I worked as shepherd," he smiles. "I was in charge of a herd of goats in northern Morocco." Until he crossed the Straits and settled in the province of Tarragona. Unemployed, handicapped by the lack of training and a chronic disease for many years improvised direction of prayers in several mosques in the vicinity of Valls and Torredembarra. Rachid H. worked as an imam. "Not really, but I know Islam better than others", said after admitting that no studies that Muslim countries call for the task.

What kind of prayers were performed by this improvised imam? "I talked about everything: the relationship between men and women, life's problems," he says. Witnesses say those prayers castigated women and young Muslims who were related to people outside this belief. Rachid denies without elaborating. But at home, he stores magazines, recordings and videos that shed some clue to his speeches. The material supports that an adulterous wife should be punished with death and supports other repressive behaviors on the role of women relative to men, according to the report of the register details of the property conducted by the Autonomous Police in 2009. Rachid, who asked not to reveal his name for his legal situation, only occasionally leads prayers, due to his poor state of health and also because he is on probation after being charged with promoting violence linked to radical Salafism, Islam's ultra-conservative current.
I don't care about his health. If he is Moroccan, he should have been expelled after learning about his sermons.
Rachid's sexist diatribes and repressive tone are common elements between the improvised imams. They are people without religious training that have emerged as leaders of the prayers of their communities, generally in the most precarious and isolated from major urban centers and without the means to hire a minimally trained imam.

Abu Omar Hussein
As Abu Omar Hussein, the president of the Muslim community in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) (he said that "forbidding the hijab is a crime", last April), who, in an interview with this newspaper goes on to say that killing by stoning an adulteress is fair and in line with Islam and that the ultimate goal is to defend children, stigmatized if they are born out of wedlock. He reflects on this: "God wants you to be clean. Stoning has an objective: that no adulterer has sons. He (will give birth to) a child without a father, with hatred, (as) he has no rights (sic). Islam does not want many children of adulterers in the world."

For that reason, Omar Hussein, referring to the Iranian Sakineh Ashtiani, sentenced to death, should be stoned: "That woman and her lover killed her husband. They should kill that woman one by one, man for man (...) Islam respects human rights and women. Islam does not attack a very clean woman. "

The imam of Alcalá believes that in Europe sexual promiscuity is promoted: "Changing partners is offered. Is this is civilization? Six people make love in the same bed, without shame. It allows two women or two men marry . The nude beaches ... If Jesus son of Mary, arrived today would be ashamed. "
Another one who is in the same situation: he is Egyptian, so if he doesn't like Spain, he can go back there or be expelled, because he clearly isn't integrated in Spanish society.

What he considers as "sexual promiscuity", means only that people are free to take decisions about their life. No one is obliged to marry another human being of their own sex, no one is obliged to go around naked on beaches and also no one is obliged to change partners. But if someone wants to do it, he can. That's not "promoting sexual promiscuity", that's just freedom to choose. And there are also people who are not the least "promiscuous", because that's their choice, and not because some barbaric imam tells them that they should be stoned if they are. But this guy doesn't know about this other people, because they aren't on TV 24/7 and they give no scandals.

"Illegitimate" childs don't exist, either. They have the same rights as the children from married couples. So no hatred and no tales to support stoning.
These are examples of the improvisation with which Islam has been installed in Spain: there are no rules, standards or criteria in relation to ministers of religion to Islam. They are not properly Islamic radicals (sic): mixed religion with repressive traditions imported from their country of origin and spread as sacred mandates. This enables that cases such as the Cunit's imam, who is awaiting trial and sentence for coercing and threatening a Muslim because she lived a Western lifestyle, that generate social alarm against Islam and demonize the figure of the imams inside Spanish society. In Cunit, the imam is actually a worker who lost his job after suffering a leg injury and went on to lead the prayer of his group even though he only knows the Koran by heart, by his own account.
You see: for El País, someone who is supporting stoning in the name of religion is not "properly an Islamic radical".
However, experts warn that it's greater the risk of social exclusion that a hypothetical terrorist threat. What messages are disseminated by imams without proper training and considered radical? "If a Muslim is mixed with a Western, if only to shake hands, is contaminated by their sins." "Women can not leave home except to attend the funeral of the husband." "Children should learn the Koran and you must not associate with other children are not Muslims." "The West is against Islam, would pervert and threatens us because we are noble." These are excerpts from the prayers that magnets on Fridays, according to some followers of the mosques in the area of Reus and Tarragona. "The possibility that any imam can lead prayers is a problem but controversial cases are exceptional," defends Riad Tatary (born in Syria although now he's a Spanish national), secretary general of the representative body of Islam with the Government since 1992, the Islamic Commission of Spain (CIE). "But the media generalize these cases and have created a very dangerous Islamophobia" he notes. Controversial cases are, in effect, a minority among the thousand imams is estimated that lead prayers in Spain. "But they can't be considered as exceptions from the rule because no one has set this standard. The Islamic Commission should impose criteria to control who can and who can not exercise as imam. For their own good: untrained imams are the ones who spread the most radical and dangerous messages, "argues Jordi Moreres, sociologist expert in Islam. But they aren't so exceptional, according to other experts. "After 15 years living in Spain, I have not seen in the whole country, a single valid imam," says Hesham El Sadr, founder of the Islamic Cultural Association Attawwhid.

The indefinite figure of the imam is the main obstacle to the normalization of Islam in Spain: 1.3 million people follow this belief in the country and it is not immigrants only but a growing majority has or is in the process of achieving Spanish nationality.

Nevertheless, anyone able to convince their fellow Muslims, can be constructed into an imam, whether he is liberal-leaning, conservative or just a visionary. It is a reality that has taken root among the Muslim communities in impoverished areas, with virtually illiterate immigrants who barely know the language, laws or Spanish customs. This cocktail caused cases of imams that encourage isolation and rejection of Western people or situations such as Lleida's imam, Abdelwahab Houzi, monitored by the National Intelligence Center as one of the most dangerous because of his radicalism and that according to several faithful advocates polygamy in his prayers, a tradition alien to Islam (sic). Others promote criticism and attacks on Western values that lead to suspicion of terrorism.

And if you fear that you cannot act equitably towards orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess; this is more proper, that you may not deviate from the right course.
Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self-restraint, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. (Verses 3 and 129 from Sura An-Nissa, Women).
Those two verses state that:
1. Polygamy is allowed.
2. It's limited to four wifes.

The article ends:
"It's possible that extremist imams living in Spain are spreading this type of message, as an attempt to assert the traditions of their country of origin. We need time and quiet to contact them and make them understand," claims Tatary. ICE, on paper, is the referee that should regulate and account for the activity of the imams, and it's engaged in a reform to settle the current crisis of representation that encourages lawlessness. There are a thousand of Muslim communities in Spain, about 800 of them registered. More than 400 are not represented in this body.
"It's possible...". It seems Mr. Tatari doesn't believe that these cases really exist. And no, these extremist imams are not waiting for Tatari and friends to reform anything (if that's their intention indeed), they are spreading this message now.

France: Conference about "Immigration, Islamism: Is France Threatened?" Cancelled

The Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), the political party of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was forced on Tuesday to cancel a public debate organized in its headquarters, amid concerns that the debate would spark new accusations of racism and discrimination.
Titled “Immigration, Islamism: Is France Threatened?,” the controversial debate did not come at a good time for UMP, which is now presenting a new bill on immigration in the Assemblee Nationale (National Assembly), the lower house of French bicameral Parliament.
We have chosen this time to really participate in Parliament discussions on future immigration law, as they are starting this week and will be at full intensity on that day,” explained the Droite Libre (Free Right), the UMP-associated group that organized the meeting.
These issues are a concern to our fellow citizens, yet they almost never have a chance to discuss them; those who dare to mention immigration and Islam are framed by the intellectual terror of ‘political correctness.’”

"Ingenuity, creativity, and guts have sustained this People longer than any other identifiable group of people in existence today.

After lengthy research, the amount of material uncovered attesting to the generosity and deep feelings of love for their fellow man, is staggering - much more than could ever be stuffed into 1 video on YouTube.

So here, with the help of Bob Dylan and his Neighborhood Bully, is an attempt to show what cannot even be described as the "tip of the iceberg."

Who would have thought that such a small country, bound with so many problems of its own would have time to even think about problems of others, let alone actually be permanently organized to specifically be on hand when emergency assistance is needed.

Is there any other country in the world that can show such a "resume'"? The funny thing is (am not sure that is the right word) that they do not ask for anything in return - only respect as human beings - and even that, sad to say, is too much.

Even the numerous countries that this "Bully" has selflessly raced to provide with humanitarian aid in times of chaotic turmoil and strife, fail to speak up in public on Her behalf.

What a strange phenomenon . . .

Russia, Mexico, Ecuador, Turkey, Greece, Chile, Kenya, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, and many others - all recipients of vital emergency assistance from the "Neighborhood Bully" - it must be supposed that they simply wish not to upset the well established myth, born of lies and deceit successfully creating (as was/is the purpose) in the eyes of the world, the image that is known as the "Neighborhood Bully."

If you critisize Islam, you should be sued

That is the conclusion the Islamic Conference Organization has reached in its last meeting, because the free world is not menaces by the violent Jihadis. The real danger lives in the islamophobes who critisize Islam:




So this is what they were up to. I wonder what were they asking for, when I blogged about the recent riots in Denmark. And I wondered it because, when the cartoons' riots, they asked for a UN resolution against the defamation of Islam and they got one, with the title mentioning the "religions" but inside of it, it only mentions Islam.

As Robert Spencer says, to preserve a social group from critics is de facto a real tyranny. It means their ideology its considered above the rest, or, if you would like to use the Islamic term, it means the submission of everyone to Islam.

If we don't defend freedom of speech, no one will. We just have to consider which countries voted for that UN resolution: countries so respectful of religion as China, North Korea or Burma, autocracies like Russia, together with Islamic teocracies like Iran or Islamic states such as Nigeria, Egypt or Sudan.

Democracies all voted against. Any bell ringing??

Where You Find Muslims, There You Find Tyranny

Serge Trifkovic said most of the conflicts in the world involve Muslims, and if you ended all conflicts that involved Muslims right now, the world would be a pretty peaceful place.

Muslims, both moderates and extremists, are always quick to point out that Islam is a religion of peace. But Trifkovic's statement made me curious, so I've been searching on Google for a map of world conflicts (and which ones involve Muslims). I haven't found what I was looking for yet, but I found two maps (on two different web sites that have nothing to do with each other) that are interesting when you see them together.

The first map is by Freedom House, an organization that tracks democracies around the world. It shows their map of world freedom. The purple countries are the least free:



A few clicks later, I found this map of populations of Muslims. It shows by color where the densest population of Muslims live in the world (the highest population of Muslims is darkest blue):


Pretty interesting, huh? One of the things I've advocated repeatedly is that we can reduce Islamic terrorism by pushing for women's rights.

In order for women to have rights, the Muslims cannot have Shari'a law. Or it would have to be so modified as to be unrecognizable. To weaken the hold of Shari'a would probably weaken the population's belief that the Qur'an is the perfect word of Allah, which would include the instructions to take over the world.
This would make it more difficult for jihadis to recruit new soldiers. And hopefully those young men would find more productive things to do with their time than blowing themselves up.

And all this could be brought about by focusing solely on promoting women's rights.

Do you think every woman should have human rights? Yes? So does almost everybody else in the world. This is a place we can join together in a mutual and important purpose.

In the war against the Islamization of the world, this is the place where the strength of the free world can overcome the weak spot of Shari'a.

Grand Mufti speeches at the EU, warns The Netherlands

In their infinite wisdom, the European Parliament invited the Grand Mufti of Syria, Ahmad Badr Al-Din Hassoun, to deliver a speech. Supposedly, he's the first in a series of 'eminent religious and cultural leaders' to address the Toy Parliament in this, the EUnions 'Year of Intercultural Dialogue'. Naturally, the EP itself was gushing with praise and goodwill towards the Grand Mufti:

In a speech to MEPs on Tuesday on the subject of intercultural dialogue, the Grand Mufti of Syria, Ahmad Badr Al-Din Hassoun, stressed the value of culture as a unifying rather than a dividing force. Dr Hassoun was addressing a formal sitting of Parliament as the first speaker in a series of visits by eminent religious and cultural leaders in 2008, which has been designated European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

Opening his address, the Grand Mufti stressed that "there is one single culture" in the world, the culture of humankind. Indeed, he said, "we are all building one culture, so I do not believe in the conflict of cultures".

If a clash did exist, this was "a conflict with ignorance, terrorism and backwardness". Stressing the universality of culture, he said that the Soviet and American space agencies, in sending men to the moon, had built on the civilisation founded by Europeans before them. The Grand Mufti denied there is such a thing as "Holy war", telling the gathered MEPs that there is only "Holy Peace". However, completely missing from the EU's own reporting was the warning Dr. Hassoun has for the Netherlands (NL):
Should it come to riots, bloodshed and violence after broadcating the Quran movie by PVV-leader Geert Wilders, then Wilders will be responsible.

This was said by the Grand Mufti of Syria, Ahmad Badr Al-Din Hassoun, Tuesday in teh European Parliament, where he gave a speech at the invitation of the fraction presidents.

If Wilders tears up or burn a Quran in his film 'this will simply mean he is inciting wars and bloodshed. And he will be responsible', according to te Grand Mufti.

Al Hassoun thinks it is 'the responsibility of the Dutch people to stop Wilders'.

Which comes down to a case of blackmail against the Netherlands, in direct contradiction to the 'peaceful' nature of the Grand Mufti's speech as reported by the EP's own site, doesn't?

Why was this primitive loudmouth allowed to address the EP in the first place? And why wasn't he taken to task about the persecution of Christians and others of a faith not islam in Syria and the ME at large?

It speaks volumes about the EUnions dedication to freedom (none) that the entire parliament enthusiatically applauded a speaker that made some not very veiled threats against one of the EU member states, one of the founding states, even. No protests, just a gushing report on the speech, glossing over the less refined passages in it. Mustn't offend the Mufti, you see. Appeasement, that is what matters.

Can we leave yet?

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about the the people who want to kill me, kill my family and destroy my entire culture.

I am not interested in keeping an open mind about a religion that openly declares our only options are conversion to Islam, subjugation by Islam, or death at the hand of Islam.

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about the partisans in our government, who are more interested in regaining power by undermining the current administration, than focusing their hatred on the enemies of the American people.

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about the members of our media who seem determined to dispirit the American people, undermine confidence in our leadership and offer aid and comfort to the enemy through their blatantly biased (and often factually incorrect) reporting...

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about teachers who preach anti-American sentiments to captive student audiences, and who publicly ostracize any student who does not pander to their leftist agenda.

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about people who find moral equivalence between what our nation is doing in Iraq, and the actions of those who behead people, blow up children with suicide belts and target civilian populations with airliners.

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about people who are too intellectually lazy to learn a little history, but instead prefer to regurgitate the latest news sound-bites, wholly undigested and with absolutely no concept of historical context.

I am not interested in keeping an "open mind" about my fellow citizens who believe we are not at war, that our government is the true enemy, and that this is all some complex conspiracy to reduce our freedoms, and ultimately increase control over the American people.

I am not even slightly interested in keeping an "open mind" about the people who consider Hamas and Hizbollah legitimate political entities, and find moral equivalence between their actions, and the actions taken by the Israelis in self-defense.

Keeping an "open mind" is great in theory, but sometimes it's just an excuse to not take sides, or not own up to the side you have already chosen.
An open mind is a wonderful thing to have... but so are convictions.

Sometimes in life, you have to pick sides and make a stand.
