Yes folks, there's another church being converted into a mosque/family center, this time in Alabama. Anyone want to help me raise an army to reclaim the Hagia Sophia? Just let me know....

Plan to turn church into mosque OK'd

The Hoover City Council voted 6-1 to approve the Birmingham Islamic Society's plans to turn a church into a mosque and family life center during a Monday meeting that at times sounded like a referendum on the religion.
The society has a contract to buy a church on Hackberry Lane from Point of Grace Ministries. Plans call for renovations to the existing building for a mosque, and eventually, the construction of a family life center.
Residents have opposed the plans, citing traffic concerns, but on Monday, Loyd Brannon criticized Islam, saying it is murdering, kidnapping and enslaving Christians, and it has not made a lot of apology for the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
"Islam has a very bad international reputation at the present time," he said, adding that the purpose of Islam is to turn the world into an Islamic community. "We're allowing an organization with a worldwide terrorist reputation to establish a beachhead in this community."
But other residents supported the society's plans, saying the group will be a good neighbor.
"If this were a Baptist or a Methodist church, nobody would object," said resident Marian Lowry.
The majority of residents who opposed the plans said they are concerned about extra traffic on the winding Hackberry Lane, not the religion that would occupy the church.
They said they are afraid the mosque may grow into a megachurch that would overwhelm their community.
Society officials said they have no plans to expand beyond the existing 6.5-acre site. The move is being driven by a plan to free up space for a school at the organization's Homewood campus, and not an effort to draw all Muslims to Hoover.
Worship services will continue at the Homewood mosque. At the Hoover mosque, officials expect the largest traffic volumes at a Friday service, which would draw about 250 people.
Traffic engineers estimated minimal impact on Hackberry Lane, because the Friday service, which starts at 1 p.m., is not at a peak traffic time.
Council President Gary Ivey cautioned the crowd about the nature of the council's decision, saying it was about the site work.
"This council is not sitting in judgment tonight on the type of religion that's going there," he said.
After the meeting, society President Ashfaq Taufique said he was elated that the council put aside the stereotypes portrayed during the meeting. He also said the society would work to improve Hackberry Lane.
"They will find in us nothing but good neighbors who are going to help make that road better," he said.

I read this wrong initially, thinking that this was taking place in Britain. However, I still want my questions regarding my beloved Britain to remain below, so there they are:
Yet this is worse than just a "beachhead in the community", as is claimed in the story. Numerous stories and protests, many posted on this website, have shown that there is already a quite well established muslim community in Britain, much of it violent in thought and occasionally action toward its host country. What is Britain to do, reestablish the Danelaw?
Furthermore, why has there been such an intense interest in Islam amongst Britain's High Society? People reported on like superstars in the British rags have already converted and fully embrace Islam. With the "upper crust" setting such an example, though also many middle class and lower, what does this grim future hold? It took the conversion of many well-to-do women (particularly) in the Roman world to help bring Christianity from persecuted minority to official religion. So what are we to make of Brits like Jemimah Khan and Lord Birt, among others?
I think JK Rowling is completely correct. Voldemort has returned.

Hey Pim,
Can you give examples of prominent citizens who have converted?
I haven't heard about that.
Also, what is Voldemort, and what are the Danelaws?
Jaco--Voldemort is the ultimate enemy in the Harry Potter series. "He who shall not be named".
As for the Danelaw, that's almost a whole post itself, but I'll go for it anyway here. When England finally (seemingly) was under Anglo-Saxon rule(s) in the 8th century AD, the Viking raids began. And they meant business, baby. Not all were Danes, but were called so (or 'denes') but the English (anglisc at this point). Eventually, many of these raiders wanted to settle, and most of this settlement happened along the East of Britain, so a sort of boundary was agreed to to seperate the two groups and their rule. This was called the "danelaw", a line running up the island to handle the new immigrants/invaders. Being of similar langauage and culture at that point, however, everyone kind of got along after a while. The language changed to adapt. Don't get me wrong, there was much bloodshed over this and this is where The Battle of Maldon and Canute fit in (and Ivar the Boneless-love that name). But everyone got things together enough in the end, just in time for the Normans to invade. And they just won flat out, the Germano-Gaulish buggers.
OK, I'll shut up now.
"If this were a Baptist or a Methodist church, nobody would object,"
Not sure about that. Who would want Baptist rape gangs or Methodist arson squads marauding in their neighborhood? Not to mention living next door to stockpiles of explosives and poison gas that these religions tend to store in their 'places of worship'.
Still I suppose it could be worse. It might have been a bunch of blood-crazed human-sacrificing Quaker beheaders.
Pim,
Ivar the Boneless could have used some Viagra.
Jaco, your comments are getting so, um, sexual....is there something you're not telling us? Heeheehee....
