So why are we disliked? Here is one plausible reason...
The mere fact of American power, combined with a readiness to use it in defense of American interests, seems enough to damn the United States in the eyes of many. Even when American power is deployed for their benefit, the gesture is either reinterpreted as malign in intent or is somehow disconnected from the dominant paradigm of American omnipotence and malevolence.

Indonesians should adjust their attitude accordingly to their situation, if you ask me. Sumatra and Java are covered in clusters of H5N1 and Mt. Merapi on Java could blow at any moment. They're going to need a LOT more help. And if I remember correctly (actually I DO remember) many Arab nations withheld aid after the December 2004 tsunami under the excuse that the tsunami was the "will of allah" due to the Indonesians' willingness to allow so many foreigners to vacation in their lands and for not following Islam more strictly and letting their dhimmis get away with too much. Well, that's ONE way to get out of giving aid. Far better to keep those petrodollars for fundraisers for the families of suicide bombers.
