Pope introduced to an old Ottoman custom on eve of trip to Turkey

On November 28 Pope Benedict XVI will begin his much-discussed trip to Turkey. In anticipation of that event, the pontif recently received an important visit from President Papadopoulos of the [Greek] Republic of Cyprus.
[Translated from the original french:]

Papadopoulos hands Pope photos of churches destroyed by turks

President of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos was received by Pope Benedict XVI friday, to whom he offered a photo album of destroyed and disused churches from the turkish section of the island, stated journalists accredited to the Vatican.
... M. Papadopoulos, who had come to Rome specifically for this trip to the Vatican, talked about the situation of "the diverse christian communities of the island", according to the Vatican.
...
During the traditional exchange of gifts, the cypriot president handed the pope a 19th century icon from a destroyed church in the turkish zone, as well as a photo album of 300 churches that were either destroyed or turned to other use within that part of the island.

"Incredible", muttered the pope, quite moved.
...
This visit comes just over two weeks away from Benedict XVI's upcoming trip to Turkey, and at atime when the EU, to Cyprus' satisfaction, is pressing Turkey to open her ports to greek Cypriot shipping.

The treatment of Cypriot Christian churches at the hands of the turks since their invasion is shocking. From March of 2006, an eye-witness account of the respect the island's turks hold for Europe's Christian heritage:

The Islamization of the north of the island has been concretized in the destruction of all that was Christian. Yannis Eliades, director of the Byzantine Museum of Nicosia, calculates that 25,000 icons have disappeared from the churches in the zone occupied by the Turks.
...
At the village of Peristerona, on the road to Famagosta, the medieval monastery of Saint Anastasia ... is being used as a stable, with the cows chewing their cud amid what remains of the ancient cells.
... [Along the coast] many of the churches have been turned into restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, for the enjoyment of the tourists. ... Almost the entire artistic patrimony of the Orthodox Church in the territory occupied by the Turks – 520 buildings between churches, chapels, and monasteries – has been sacked, demolished, or disfigured. Only three churches and one monastery, the monastery of Saint Barnabas, which has been turned into a museum, are in a more or less dignified state.
... I insist: what do you have to say about the churches that, still today, are being turned into mosques? [Huseyn Ozel, a government spokesman for the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus] spreads his arms wide:

“It is an Ottoman custom...”

Is there a website or archive of this custom as expressed in other muhammedan conquests?

I specifically recall viewing the desecrated religious structures in Kosovo some years ago - online somewhere.

It is important to document this uniform tradition.

Links to images and reports are greatly appreciated.

Anon--yes, at one of my favorite sites. This site on Byzantium has links to anything and everything you could want on these subjects:

Other languages are available. Maybe I should send the Pope the link for all of them.....Naw, I'll send him a list of names of relatives I never got to meet because the Turks murdered them.

I'm very concerned about this trip.....I think that my beloved Pope is either going to get killed or kick ass and take names or both. Egads. I'm going to be watching the Catholic network (EWTN) 24/7 just like when he went to Germany....

And BTW, thanks for posting this, and a BIG right on to Papadopolous! He's my hero of the week. EXCELLENT move on his part. Wow, I'm on the jazz now.

When is the Catholic church going to realize it is at war?

Turning your cheek only goes that far...

I think the church needs military orders again!

Von Schlicht,
The Pope himself is pretty hip to what's going on. Read his book "Without Roots" when you get a chance. He understands.

Getting his cardinals and bishops off their butts is another matter.

Pastorius. I must admit I have been negative towards this Pope - but I will look up this book and read it - as I frankly know little about him.

I just read a longer discussion on what is happening in Sudan. Of course with most explaining at length, how it is a racial problem, ie tribal warfare.

One of the relief organisations have once more been banned from helping.

The Sudanese government wants no witnesses to the milicia killings. The goverment guarantee they no longer support the milicia - but all evidence points the other way.

Who cares - we are so far only talking 200.000 dead Christians and 2.000.000 on the run.

The death Cult of Mo has absolutely nothing to do with the killing youths and there are absolutely no historical parallels. Ask the Turks (oops I forgot - forbidden subject in Turkey)

Von Schlicht,

I think you will be surprised to hear that the situation in the Sudan is even worse than that book says. I can tell you that I am amazed that the media has covered it up so effectively.

The truth is, over two million people have been killed over the past 20 years. The Arab Muslim government uses the Janjaweed to kill their enemies. They started with the black Christans, and Animists. This is the part the media never tells you about. The first two million they killed were Christians and Animists. The last couple hundred thousand have included a lot of Muslims (black Sufis, primarily). When they started killing the Muslims, that's when the media started reporting on it.

That was about three or four years ago.

Note that the whole time it has been Arabs killing black people. That the media doesn't care about.

What's more, in the Sudan, they kill the black men, and use the women and children as slaves and sex slaves. there is literally black slavery going on in Sudan, but the media doesn't fucking care to tell the world about it. Arabs are using black people as slaves, and it is ok.

Here's an article on it:

I think it's probably time I do a post on this. Periodically I do a post on this subject so that newcomers can learn about it, since the media is creating a blackout.
