The network raised more than $500,000 for Hizbullah from Lebanese businessmen in the tri-border region, officials said. Hizbullah maintained a network of agents in the South American countries to identify contributors and collect funds.On Dec. 6, the Treasury Department said nine people and two entities would be sanctioned and their U.S. assets frozen. The entities consisted of a shopping center in Paraguay and an electronics company.

Officials said the nine assisted Assad Ahmad Barakat, a Hizbullah supporter and owner of Casa Hamze. The electronics store was reportedly used for arms, drugs and counterfeit U.S. currency trafficking.

Thanks for writing about this, Epa. This is important and very few people know about it. Believe it or not, I first learned about the tri-border area Al Qaeda problem from the New Yorker.
