Boycotting the Associated Press: IBA Rules For AP Source Material From Now On - It's Banned

Charles at Little Green Footballs says he's joining a boycott of the Associated Press,

As reported here at IBA, AP's crackdown on writers who quote their articles has resulted in the closing of two anti-Jihad blogs; Aussie News and Sharia Finance Watch.

For this reason, I believe that we at IBA also ought to join in this boycott.

From now on, when you find an article from AP which contains news you would like to post, either find another source for it, or paraphrase it and mention that you got it from a "prominent" wire service.

That way, if one of our readers wants to source our work, they will be able to do so.

Here's what Charles has to say:

Lots of fallout today from the Associated Press’s self-defeating decision
to threaten legal action against web sites that link to and quote their
articles. Techcrunch says they’re banning the AP: Here’s Our New Policy On A.P. stories: They’re Banned.

Not a bad idea, but kind of difficult to carry out, since the
Associated Press is literally everywhere, and many news sites often use sections
of AP articles combined with their own reporting.

But I’ll gladly join this movement; until the AP climbs down from this
caveman approach, there will be no more links to AP stories in front page
articles at LGF.

F%@# the AP.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Count me in. But as was stated, this may be difficult. Many 'news' sources completely copy the AP articles and send them out, almost like talking points for the Democrats.

Debbie,
If another news source uses AP with no attribution, and we post it, then how could we have known it was AP?

We ought to play by the Fair Usage rule all the time anyway.

Can it be . . .does the AP staff read blogs?

The timing of the (AP) story content posted at mypetjawa appears to be baiting bloggers professing to boycott them. (baiting by AP - not jawa)

Hmmmmm?

P.S. I specifically tried to avoid any direct link to the AP article to honor your boycott.

Anonymous,

Well, I seriously doubt they would read our blog.

However, we ought to abide by rules anyway.

And now we have a new rule; no AP stories.

Thanks for the UAE story. Jees, that dude is a sick guy.
