Gorecki: Symphony No. 3

Stunning music.

The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs by Henryk Gorecki

Soprano: Isabel Bayrakdaraian, Sinfonietta Cracovia, conducted by John Axelrod.

Taken from "HOLOCAUST - A Music Memorial Film from Auschwitz".

For the first time since its liberation, permission was granted for music to be heard in Auschwitz and a number of leading musicians were brought there to perform music for the film.

I'm speechless. Very moving.

Imagine... the first time music has been heard there since liberation.

Contrast this with when the Nazis played music while the Jews were being led to the "showers".

I assume the graffiti on the walls and pillars is from the prisoners... very moving.

Thanks so much for posting this. Some of us may have never heard of it without your post.

I'm glad you guys liked this.

I was listening to this piece in the backyard yesterday, while smoking a cigar. It is beautiful, so I wanted to share it.

I was thinking about how appropriate the music was for the subject matter of our site.

And then, when I looked up the music on YouTube, I was surprised to find this video, linking the music to Auschwitz. I don't know anything of Gorecki's intentions when he wrote the music. All I know is it is beautiful/tragic music.
