im still going to give him the benifit of the doubt.

as former regular army I can say the life can break people, I have seen it.

but

if soem one who speaks perfect english was off camera while it wasnt rolling, telling you that this was the moment of descision, iether say what we tell you or you are of no more use and, see this dull butcher knife? we are going to tie you up and start sawing your head off!

well

I would be hard pressed to beleive thier are many out thier that could stand up to that kind of pressure. and that is all im saying.

hes an american hes the victim and they are the bad guys period.

Carlos -- down a few posts (yesterday I think) I had this as part of a post with a lot of Malkin stuff but more importantly another post that questions, if this is true, was he trying to desert or was he simply (?) AWOL? Looking for some fun etc.

But otherwise I agree with rumcrook. He's an American, a hostage, a captive, not a POW, in the hands of some very vicious killers.

heres an aside. just a personal experience story,

one night while out in the field, during something called artep, with many other companies out in the field also, I wandered away from the company to take a piss. we were in an admin period and not actually playing war games yet.

the company that set up near us and had already been in the field for a week was allready training and doing war games.

I was wearing my soft cap and no web gear , just my rifle, well that happened to be the dress for designated enemy combatants, but also what you wear when not yet training.

Im at the edge of our company area and got to far away and was mistaken by the other company as an enemy combatant and 8 guys physically captured me even though I protested that it was a mistake.

my whole point is while this was strictly training and a stupid foul up,

it could be easy to think you are in a safe area/zone with nothing going on, and someone has snuck up close and set a trap capture a prisoner.

maybe he didnt think he was walking away that far. maybe someone from the trusted guides said check this thing out only 100 feet outside camp, thats a nothing walk.

granted you would be stupid to do anything sans weapon but people do stupid things.

I cant get behind saying he deserted.

There is a critical difference rumcrook - u said: "I was wearing my soft cap and no web gear , just my rifle" to take a piss.

This soldier did not take his weapon - and wandered off in an active war zone.

yes he did. really stupid huh.

kids do stupid things.

heres a partial list of stupid things ive done in my life,

decided to use the razor knife in cargo pocket becuase i was too lazy to walk back to the shed and get pruning sheers, I then proceeded to cut a branch off an apple tree in my yard and when I cut thru it rebounded and I stuck the knife straight into the vein in my wrist where apon Looked at my wriist with my O face and promptly got showered in the face with blood while staggering back to the house to frighten my wife.

so, maybe he was doing one thing, got lazy and didnt have his weapon but then made the horrible descision not to go in the other direction and get his rifle prior to some other thing he thought of. hell he thought it will only take me a minute or two, I dont wantr to make this any longer,

lazy mistake?

shit happens

hell I remember digging a fox hole, and leaving my rifle leaned against a tree to walk 50 ft away and borow a pick to break through roots and getting yelled at for leaving my rifle behind even if it was close.

but things like that happen. and chances when you have thousands of young men doing this is stupid things will keep happening

I'm with Rumcrook and MR on this, though I kind of admire Peters Patton-like demand for no compromise.

Peters is, if I am not mistaken, not actually a member of the Military anymore.

I would side with him if what he said was fact not conjecture.

its his conjecture that the soldier "wondered away"

and based apon that hes conjectured that his platoon mates are disgusted with him, and that he is possibly a deserter.

and he has conjectured that this soldier cannot be trusted because he "lied" in the video,

ok, he lied.

again if someone is telling you say this or I saw off your head,....

Rumcrook,
Well, the guy is a traitor, but as you say, how many people would stand up to this.

Truth is, I think Peters words are appropriate, in a way.

I certainly think that when this man returns to America, he ought to hang his head in shame for betraying himself and his country like this. I do not think he should be proud.

We are supposed to stand for something. Christians celebrate those who were murdered because they would not renounce their belief in Christ. Similarly, I believe Americans ought to celebrate those who will not renounce their belief in Freedom (because Islam is slavery).

I am reminded of the Italian soldier who, upon being threatened on video by his Jihadist captors, proudly declared,

"Watch and see how an Italian will die."

That's a hero.

This man is a coward and a small-time traitor. He ought to be ashamed.

However, we do not know if he is a deserter, and I doubt that is the case.

I'm guessing he made a mistake as Rumcrook proposed.

I remember that italian.

I dont believe this man will ever come home. I beleive more likely he will suffer a fate of nightmares.

so he will pay for any shame he has caused.

I'm of two minds on this. I believe this guy deserves sympathy, but he is also a coward, and as such he ought to hang his head in shame.

Many of us make mistakes. And when we do, we ought to be ashamed.

This man's cowardice is a betrayal of his uniform and of his fellow soldiers.

But, of course, few people would have any more courage than he has.

Now, if we had the same kind of will we did when we were winning WWII, we might find we also had more heroes. I'm pretty sure of it.

More and more, I'm feeling as if this fellow deserted.

The truth will come out sooner or later.

Anonymous said...

you have a feeling he deserted?

I have a feeling im gonna hit it on the scratchers I bought tonight.

both based only on feelings.

im gonna leave feelings out of it.

hes no hero, and objectively can be seen as less than courageous, even displaying cowardice,

but hes ours and we need to get him back not villify him for not spitting at the camera and saying fuck you cut off my head.

Pastorius said...

Rumcrook,
I agree with you on that. Absolutely. He's our man. We have a responsibility to him.

And certainly, he's has not done anything near as egregious, in his cowardice, as his captors have done.
