Flights to Haiti Halted; No Space or Fuel

FAA Halts Air Traffic to Quake-Ravage Country Because There's No Room for More Planes and No Jet Fuel for Planes to Return

(CBS/ AP) U.S. officials said they have halted planes from leaving the United States for Haiti at the request of the Haitian government because there is no room on the ground for more planes and no jet fuel for planes to return.

I can't believe they still only have one stinkin' runway at that airport after all this time. Plus the port is badly damaged and nothing can be brought in that way. The damage extends all the way down to Jacmel on the southern coast and the road up from there is blocked. So hardly anything can get in or out. It's beginning to sound like the only functional place in Haiti right now is the Hotel Oloffson.

Do you have a link to the information on the port? I did not know that.

If that is true, then how are we going to get any aid to them? Airlift?

How are we going to get Americans off the island?

It gets worse and worse - without communication, the Haitians don't even realize they're government is as decimated as they are.

Haitians block roads with corpses to protest slow government response"

Protesting their government . . .what government?! When a nation exists and survives on the teat of government/UN/International aid - this is what to expect.

No doubt, the Haitian government is corrupt and even worse. Mark Steyn was making the point (on the Hugh Hewitt Radio Show) yesterday that if you look at the world, former British states (like Bermuda, Jamaica, etc.) are functioning, while former French states (like Haiti) are non-functioning.

Isn't it interesting that New Orleans, Louisiana is also a former French state?

Anyway, with as much trouble as Haiti is having now, I'm not going to spend a lot of time picking on them and their government.

Haiti shares an island with the DR, doesn't it? Why can't they use the DR airport and truck stuff over???

The DR has gas, fuel, runways, etc.

Bizarre.
