There have been some outbreaks of church burnings by self-proclaimed satanists over the years, including a rash of them in Norway recently. But with no graffiti messages or such being left the motive is harder to pinpoint.

The video at Weasel Zippers states that 9 (not six) churches were burned. Six were intentionally set within a 150 mile radius of East Texas. Baptist churches, a Christian Science church and nondenominational churches have burned.

Faith Church was the first to burn and ruled arson.
Grace Community Church in Athens and Lake Athens Baptist Church were set ablaze within hours of each other.
Tyland Baptist Church of Tyler was torched Jan. 16th. The following night the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Tyler burned to the ground.

On Jan. 20, the arsonist struck again at the Prairie Creek Fellowship of Lindale.

First Baptist Church of Temple has been ruled arson but unrelated to East Texas.
Wills Point Church (evidence of forced entry)

Saginaw Park Baptist Church in Tarrant County

Russell Memorial United Methodist Church in Wills Point (Thursday)

According to the ATF, 90 houses of worship were set on fire last year nationwide.

In 1996, President Bill Clinton set up a National Church Arson Task Force after a series of church fires were thought to be racially motivated. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, the usual range of motives was found.

Motives for arsonists include not just prejudice, but covering up another crime such as burglary; insurance fraud; or simply the arsonist's craving to start fires.
