Another Lancaster City Official Pisses Off Muslims

UPDATED

Good for him.

What are they putting in the water in Lancaster City?

L.A. Times:

Mayor denounced for saying Lancaster is 'growing a Christian community'
January 31, 2010 2:17 pm

Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris drew criticism from a leading Muslim group today after saying in his annual State of the City address that the high desert town was “growing a Christian community.”

"We're growing a Christian community, and don't let anybody shy away from that,” Parris told the audience of ministers gathered for his address.

“I need [Lancaster residents] standing up and saying we're a Christian community, and we're proud of that," the mayor said.

The Greater Los Angeles area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations denounced the statement and said it plans to file a complaint about the mayor's remarks with the civil rights division of the U.S. Justice Department.

“Elected officials should not use their public positions to impose their religious beliefs on others," said Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Los Angeles chapter of CAIR.

The mayor, reached by telephone today, said his remarks did not intend to impose his faith on others, and he said he would make no apology.

“This is just about very few people wanting to get their 15 minutes of fame,” he said. “I guess they got it.”

As one who actually lives in this area, here are some observations:

1. The original furor concerned some remarks councilwoman Sherry Marquez made on Facebook, about the case where a "moderate" Moslem beheaded his wife; basically, she said Islam has a problem with women. That, and not the mayor's remarks, was the cause of the original uproar. Moslems from the local mosque in Palmdale swarmed a city council meeting, demanding not only she apologize, but the entire Republican party as well!

2. On Friday, January 29th, there was a rally at the mosque, condemning Marquez; there was another rally, at Lancaster City Hall, supporting Marquez; guess which one was bigger, and had all the city bigwigs attending?

3. It was after Friday that the emphasis suddenly shifted from Marquez to R. Rex Parris himself. My own belief is that he was the one they were really after all along, and le affaire Marquez was just an excuse, or that they got nervous, not wanting Lancasterians/Palmdaleites to really take a close look at how Islam actually does treat women, and its connection with honor killings.

Whatever the case, CAIR-L.A. is now involved.

the Moslems out here have been "bugged" for a long time. This isn't the first time they've played the victim card, or gone after someone; they silenced a Baptist pastor, by the name of Yancey, for speaking out against Islam; they got a teacher at Antelope Valley College fired, for asking a young Moslem woman to remove her hijab while in class. They are, to be blunt, spoiling for a fight. It has nothing whatsoever to do with responding to silly comments; people, especially politicians, say dumb things all the times. It's about advancing Shari'a law.

The local paper, by the way, has always treated the Islamic community here with respect, not to mention rather soppy affection, and always supports them, and is sympathetic to them. So does the local interfaith council, which is also strongly influenced by the local Wiccan/Pagan community (of which we actually have a lot).

Question ...“growing a Christian community.” or "a growing Christian community" ..one is an action, the other an observation.

Either way...NEITHER imposes itself on anyone.

Epa,
The Mayor's statement is stupid. A Mayor, as a representative of government, ought to have no interest in religion, but should be interested in preserving the Constitution which calls for a separation of Church and State.

That being said, I love that he got Muslims riled up.

Any opportunity to get Muslims riled up is great as far as I'm concerned. The more angry they are, the more they show their true colors.

And I won't impose myself on Lancaster, since I would not be welcome. (Though I'm sure Mayor Parris would generously extend tolerance to us godless heathen sinners as long as we knew our place and behaved ourselves.)

Mayor Parris might also want to consider getting his pastor certification and having Lancaster County designated a parish. That is the term used in Louisiana, though it does not appear to carry a specific religious designation.

Thanks Pasto. I was beginning to think there was no one else out there who hadn't climbed on this guy's bandwagon.

However, getting Muslims riled up is always a mitigating factor in favor of anybody's statements, no matter how stupid. It would be even better if he said that just to get their goats. (Assuming their not using them for romantic solace at the time.)

RRA,

LOL on the goat comment.

And, you said: getting Muslims riled up is always a mitigating factor in favor of anybody's statements, no matter how stupid

I say: Certainly. That's what this site is all about; doing and saying stupid things just to bug Muslims.

That being said, I don't think Mayor Parris had Muslims in mind when he made the statement he made.

See I thought he did (which is why I posted it) taken with the Councilwoman's statements as well.

But what the fuck do I know?

Pastorius said...

MR,
Yes, good point. You may be right. I hadn't thought of the fact that this may have been in response to the Antelope Valley Councilwoman.

I hope you're right. That would be awesome.

By the way, if there is anything like the Wild West left in California, it is Lancaster County.

If Muslims pick a fight out there, ha ha ha ha ha.

Start a rumor that an orthodox Frisbeeterian community is planning to build a retreat next door to the local mosque. See how long it takes them to figure that one out.

Pastorius said...

Really? You disagree with my characterization of Lancaster County as being the last bastion of the Wild West?

If it isn't, then there is nothing left of the Wild West anymore.

Oh well, it would have been fun to see the Muslims go up against some cowboys.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, yes, I must disagree. I see little of Wild West here.

It's going to be CAIR going up against nervous City Hall bureaucrats. And it ain't gonna be pretty.

I do find it interesting how the emphasis has shifted from Marquez's Facebook remarks to Mayor Parris. I believe something other than hurt feelings, or being offended, is going on here.

Pastorius said...

Yep, I agree. CAIR has a larger and longer strategy at work.

Wow. So you were completely right MR!

I also agree with RRA that I don't want my city gov't supporting any religion. However, the fact is, that this is a historically "Judeo-Christian" country in religious practice. While disageeing with their religious beliefs, I try to be tolerant of them. I even sing Xmas carols. If I had to pick a religion or get my head cut off, I'd have to say, it's pretty hard to find something offensive with Jesus' teachings, offended as I might be by Pat Robertson and Christian religious extremists.

I'm trying to make the point here that when you are newcomers who have contributed nothing to this great country, maybe you should be a little more tolerant of its traditions. I don't see the Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, agnostics or athieists getting their bowels in an uproar over Parris' comment. And Marquez can say anthing she wants on her Facebook page.

If there are no cowboys left to provide frontier justice, then we are at the mercy of a very small and aggressive minority that is hell bent on imposing themselves on US.

I coudn't believe what I read here about Dearbornistan's (thank you Mac-AATown, my ass) schools taking Muslim holidays off? Really? Is that legal? Hell, the only Christian holiday we take off is Christmas, and I have a feeling that may not last much longer.

This is getting bad.
