From the Associated Press:
It will be interesting to see, in the coming days, if the Obama Administration tries to distance themselves from Hilary's statement. I believe they will.DOHA, Qatar – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that Iran is becoming a military dictatorship, a new U.S. accusation in the midst of rising tensions with Iran over its nuclear ambitions and crack down on anti-government protesters.
Speaking to Arab students at Carnegie Mellon's Doha campus, Clinton said Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps appears to have gained so much power that it effectively is supplanting the government.
"Iran is moving toward a military dictatorship," she said. "That is our view."
Last week the U.S. Treasury Department announced that it was freezing the assets in U.S. jurisdictions of a Revolutionary Guard general and four subsidiaries of a previously penalized construction company he runs because of their alleged involvement in producing and spreading weapons of mass destruction.
The Revolutionary Guard has long been a pillar of Iran's regime as a force separate from the ordinary armed forces. The Guard now has a hand in every critical area, including missile development, oil resources, dam building, road construction, telecommunications and nuclear technology.
It also has absorbed the paramilitary Basij as a full-fledged part of its command structure — giving the militia greater funding and a stronger presence in Iran's internal politics.
I think this is another example of Hilary portraying herself to the right of Obama as a prelude to a run against him in 2012.
By the way, Ahmadinejad was with the Basij militia as a young man.
The Basij is a division of the Revolutionary Guard.
It would seem to me this development would mean Ahmadinejad would have more power and the Mullahs would have less.
The Mullahs have a tremendous amount of wealth stored up from having ruled Iran for 31 year.
Wealth is a stabilizing force, generally. It makes people more Conservative, less likely to rock the boat.
It would seem to me anything that gives Achmadinejad more power, and the Mullahs less, is a bad thing.

What does this predict in terms of the RG enabling or opposing the mullah's Bring Back the Madhi game plan? Are they considered to be solidly behind Ahmadimjerk or is there any liklihood of a coup?
WTF?..... That's supposed to mean what? In reality a true military dictatorship would actually be an improvement over there. Our populace has become so ignorant and dumbed down that she can say that with a straight face.

Iran under the Mullahs has consistently pushed on all fronts simultaneously and without rest for 31 years. I don't see how any nation in their shoes would've been able to rock the boat any harder than they have been without actually committing suicide. They are basically begging Israel to attack while meanwhile alienating every sane neighbor. I can't think of a crazier organized nation, they put N. Korea to shame.
cjk,
You may well be correct.
It seems to me, however, that the Mullahs are, as insane as it seems to say, a moderating factor when it comes to Mahmoud.
Pastorius,
As for fears of Iran becoming a dictatorship, isn't that a little ridiculous, because it already is one?
I actually believe that the current Iranian dictatorship is at least as evil as Nazi Germany and would prove it if they could.
While Hitler's reoccupation of The Rhineland could be characterized as reckless, I believe Iran has acted and is acting even more recklessly.
If and when they acquire nuclear weapons the entire world and especially The Middle East will be in for a hell of a ride.
Hiliary will not be able to reach hr full potential as a political power house under the Obama administration despite she has the potential to be
Pastorius,
You have a point, Venezuela is already a dictatorship, but its not as bad as not Nazi Germany. Maybe Iran is not either, at least not yet.
