I admire Cobham's ability to play that groove left-dominated. I think he has always been more ambidextrous than most, but he seems to have really developed it to the extreme. I'd swear he used to be a right-dominated drummer.
I have developed my left foot to be stronger than my right foot, but I still lack the ability to lead a groove with my left hand.
I do, however, have more precision with my left hand, but that's mostly for "ghost notes", not power stuff.
