Fine, but appoint no replacement George

Bush Accepts Bolton's U.N. Resignation

UPDATE- George Mitchell said to be 'on short list' to be UN ambassador...GEORGE BUSH'S ADMINISTRATION HAS NOW ENDED, WE ARE NOW IN THE ADMIN OF some BROKEN MAN

Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his recess appointment expires soon, the White House said Monday.

Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton. President Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. But the appointment expires when Congress formally adjourns, no later than early January.

John Bolton has fulfilled the USA's needs in the most meaningful way possible since Adlai Stevenson waited for hell to freeze over.

This represents the abject moral failure of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove.

If Bush has an OUNCE of testosterone left he will purposefully appoint no one to the UN position, and de-emphasize our presence among the anti American and racist members who now predominate IN OUR LARGEST CITY.

Atlas says: "We're screwed". I'd like to second that. It's not just Bolton, horrendous loss though he is. It's the whole damn filthy, roaring avalanche.

Nobody here under 40 remembers the Cuban Missle Crisis. I remember it well and in my opinion it was nothing compared to this. There was a lot of hand-wringing and Kumbaya-wailing going on but I don't remember ever being really afraid. Now I'm just numb with foreboding. Am I just working myself into a state, or does anyone else here feel like they're in the middle of a slow-motion train wreck?
