It's always so damned disappointing when those who have solved an overarching riddle, even if it may have been by just showing up, think that the same kind of solution mechanisms reveal the answer to a new conundrum.
In today's NYT Mr. Scowcroft, the National Security Adviser for the end of the USSR, and a damned good one for that moment, holds forth once more in Bush41esque security rationales.
As expected, it not only disappoints, but fails, stupendously to recognize the hideous reality that we are engaged in a war.
Diplomacy is that process which becomes of use in dealing with your enemies after force of arms have reduced their ability and will to make war to that of a desire to survive.
This is why diplomacy failed in 1936, failed in 1941, worked in 1945 and is failing today.
Consider this absurd bone formed of words reshaped to mollify the "Israel is Czechoslovakia to the Iraq Study Group idiots" - harridans of doom (I am one, btw):
Resuming the Arab-Israeli peace process is not a matter of forcing concessions from Israel or dragooning the Palestinians into surrender. Most of the elements of a settlement are already agreed as a result of the negotiations of 2000 and the “road map” of 2002. What is required is to summon the will of Arab and Israeli leaders, led by a determined American president, to forge the various elements into a conclusion that all parties have already publicly accepted in principle.
This is a stupendous HALLUCINATION, sir
