We have arrived at the moment of truth.
In Vietnam, the USA lost a war that didn't matter, with no commitment, in a place that didn't have strategic american interests, far far away, knowing that the consequences would (for us) be those of pride and place.
Today we find ourselves refusing to make war again, for whatever poor reasons there are, allowing both sanctuary and smuggling of men and material, and withholding our hand.
But now the stakes are far different.
If we lose this, or are perceived to have lost this, for whatever reason, the consequences as the leaders of Islamic Jihad have said, "an evacuation would prove resistance works and would compel jihadists to continue fighting until America is destroyed". Sorry, Nancy, but that's what they have to say.
It doesn't matter how hard it is.
It doesn't matter if we have to kill the enemy.
It doesn't matter right now if there is a democracy (although I certainly want to see one).
George, whatever the plan is,... here is what matters...
We must kill the jihadis, relentlessly and without mercy.
We must do so from the ground and from the air.
We must slaughter those who support them at the borders and across them.
No mercy for those smugglers 'just trying to make a living', this IS war.
We must slaughter the death squads.
We must obliterate the connection between the govt and these murderers.
We must obliterate those who facilitate these connections
Demonstrate our need to INFLICT HARM ON THE ENEMY
Demonstrate our willingness to chase them into their innermost sanctums until they know dread we might appear
The outcome MATTERS, act it.
If you cannot have a strategy to effectively achieve this, DON'T DO ANYTHING, and base the men and women in Kurdistan. If you cannot come up with a set of actions to get this outcome, do not add more IED targets to no point.
The ROE is one of the biggest problems.

Check out your local MSM "Breaking News" -- a US helicopter gunship has attacked two Al Qaeda operatives in Somalia. Had the OK from both the Somalian and Ethiopian gov'ts.
It was a beautiful operation. I have a post about it.
"The ROE is one of the biggest problems."
Well put. This is a most excellent blog because darn, there goes some good creative thinking - something we DON'T see in the MSM.
I agree, this has got to change. If they start a war and lose it, they have to be punished with territorial and monetary losses.
Great post, Epa. Bush seems to be fighting the war with an eye towards diplomacy and political concerns. War is war. It exists outside the theater of those concerns. It is, as you say, killing your enemy, and doing so, until they have lost all will to resist.
