From the Daily Mail Blogs:
Let me make this clear: George Bush screwed up with his when-I-look-him-in-the-eye-Vlad-is-kinda-purty talk.
We need John McCain: “When I look into his eyes I see three letters: KGB.”
But we have Barack Obama.
And we have this report from RIA, the Russian news service: “Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has proposed to Russia using a Venezuelan island for temporary hosting of Russian long-range aviation, a top-ranking Russian Air Force official said Saturday.”
And from CNN: “Russia expressed interest in using Cuban airfields during patrol missions of its strategic bombers, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported.”
And from Bloomberg: “Russia could land strategic bombers at Cuban and Venezuelan airfields while conducting patrols, the head of the Russian strategic air force was quoted as saying by the Interfax news service.”
Whoa.
This is serious. This is politics-ends-at-the-water’s-edge stuff.
Pray for the president. He must succeed in this.
I don’t know what Obama is doing this weekend, but whatever it is, he had better drop it and head back to the White House (or the equally secure Camp David).
President Obama’s overtures to Russia and Cuba have been answered.
They think he is a lightweight.

I'm not worried though, Zero must have a plan for sure. He'll appoint someone competent for this job for sure.
I read a military assessment of Russia at the end of last year (will try and dig out the link) and basically they have very little modern equipment (planes, tanks etc) and short supply of auxillary hardware.
If Russia is being this bold with such a lack of critical military resources in my mind it can only mean one of two things: the assessment was wrong, they wont have to fight to take the US because the door will be open!
With Obama at the wheel, I'm thinking the latter!
I was arguing the point about Russia never being the Wests friend with some moron on Youtube recently and I said that imagine a Russian/Islamic brain trust. I fear WW3 is going to be the most evil abomination of an event anyone has ever witnessed.
It's tit for tat. What do you expect when the U.S. sets up shop outside Russia's door step?
As for Russia's military being ill-equipped, the same can be said about the UK's military at the time of the Falklands War. That didn't stop Thatcher from waging war against Argentina to take back some little islands out in the middle of nowhere. Nationalist pride and the will to fight are indispensable considerations.
Abu, I don't think so. The Royal Navy owned the waters in the Falklands. The harrier jumpjet was unrivalled in the air - the favoured tactic was braking hard, letting the Argies fly by and then blowing them out of the sky.
The limited number of ground forces was driven by terrain and logistical restraints (ie getting them there and deploying them) rather than availability. The skill and determination of the Royal Marines was not due to their compensation for poor equipment.
Our equipment in the 80s was probably more advanced than the kit the Russians have now. You can be as proud as you like but if you are half as armed, you're as good as dead.
Not equal considerations Abu.
Our efforts in Afghanistan caused us to be on Russia's border...no denying it, but no one in Mexico bombed the Kremlin (an equivalent comparison).
This could be 1962 all over again. But this time the leaders there have a much finer understanding of the president, our politics, and media.
The presence of a live base and squadrons of TU-160's would tie up a VERY SUBSTANTIAL portion of the US air force.
Do you imagine the Russian DON'T KNOW the present SEC DEF has decided to limit the 750 F-15C/D air superiority interceptors to 183 F-22's? Seconds after takeoff each TU-160 could unload their entire supply of AS-15's, or KSH-55's. Whether or not that is likely, is in fact, irrelevant, UNLESS WE DON'T HAVE THE RESOURCES, we have to allow for it in strategic planning. If we don't have the resources we start taking chances.
The TU-160 is roughly equal to the B-1. Where is OUR advanced base for B-1's?
KSA? Diego Garcia? Guam? It's not in Tashkent or the stans.
