I have studied this Pope's works for years now, and I am convinced that he among the least anti-Semitic Christian thinkers I have ever encountered. In fact, I do believe it is clear that he is the best friends the Jews have ever had who has occupied a position of high authority within the Catholic Church. And, he is among the leading advocates, in all of Christendom, for the idea that Jews are "brothers in the Faith."
And yet, we find the Pope supporting the Durban II Conference, and we find his spokespeople making statements such as,
"The Holy See is distancing itself from the criticisms of some Western countries," Asia News, a Catholic news agency that is part of the missionary arm of the Vatican, said of Benedict's words.
And, just a few weeks back, we found the Pope "rehabilitating" a nominally-Catholic, Holocaust-denying "Cardinal" who claimed the Nazis did not employ gas chambers to kill Jews.
After an outcry lasting well over a week, the Vatican admitted their mistake, and claimed a P.R. nightmare had been the result of the fact that "a lack of communication within the Vatican."
You can say that again.
But, the question is, how does such a failure to communicate occur? How is it that this Pope is being fed information which leads him to statements and actions which contradict his real positions, which are clearly laid out in his Academic works?
I think a little bit of history on Pope Benedict/Cardinal Ratzinger is needed here, so that everyone can understand why I say this Pope is among the Jews best friends in all of Christendom.
Pope Benedict XVI and The Jews
Much has been said in the past 24 about the New Pope and his relationship to the Jews. The media is making a big deal out of the fact that he was a member of the Hitler Youth. The truth is, all German children were enrolled in the Hitler Youth. The Popes father was an ACTIVE ANTI-NAZI, which caused him to have to pack up and move on several occasions. The Popes whole family was anti-Nazi.
The media is bringing up this Hitler Youth stuff because the media does not like the fact that the Pope is a Christian. They would rather that he be a mushy New Age hypocrite like themselves.
Too bad for the media.
The Pope, Mr. Ratzinger is actually one of the best Christian friends the Jews have ever had. I am surprised to find how much his ideas dovetail with my very own.
Here is an excerpt from a very long paper, entitledThe Jewish People and Their Sacred Scriptures In The Christian Bible, much of it written by The Pope, Cardinal Ratzinger himself:
Personally, Paul continued to be proud of his Jewish origin (Rm 11:1). Referring to the time preceding his conversion, he says:
“I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors” (Ga 1:14). Having become an apostle of Christ, he says of his adversaries: “Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I” (2 Co 11:22). Still, he can relativise all these advantages by saying: “These I have come to regard as loss because of Christ” (Ph 3:7).
Nonetheless, he continues to think and reason like a Jew. His thought is visibly permeated by Jewish ideas. In his writings, as was mentioned above, we find not only continual references to the Old Testament, but many traces of Jewish traditions as well. Furthermore, Paul often uses rabbinic techniques of exegesis and argumentation (cf. I. D. 3, no. 14).
Paul's ties to Judaism are also seen in his moral teaching. In spite of his opposition to the pretentions of those who kept the Law, he himself includes a precept of the Law, Lv 19:18 (“You shall love your neighbour as yourself”) to sum up the whole of the moral life. 332 Summing up the Law in one precept is typically Jewish, as the well-known anecdote about Rabbi Hillel and Rabbi Shammai, Jesus' contemporaries, demonstrates. 333
The resistance mounted by the majority of Jews to the Christian preaching produced in Paul's heart “great sorrow and unceasing anguish” (Rm 9:2), clear evidence of his great affection for them. He said that he himself was willing to accept on their behalf the greatest and most inconceivable sacrifice, to be branded “accursed”, separated from Christ (9:3). His afflictions and suffering forced him to search for a solution: in three lengthy chapters (Rm 9-11), he goes to the heart of the problem, or rather the mystery, of Israel's place in God's plan, in the light of Christ and of the Scriptures, without giving up until he is able to conclude: “and so all Israel will be saved” (Rm 11:26).
These three chapters in the Letter to the Romans constitute the most profound reflection in the whole of the New Testament on Jews who do not believe in Jesus. Paul expressed there his most mature reflections.
The solution he proposed is based on the Scriptures which, in certain places, promised salvation only to a “remnant” of Israel. 334 In this phase of salvation history then, there is only a “remnant” of Israelites who believe in Christ Jesus, but this situation is not definitive. Paul observes that, from now on, the presence of the “remnant” proves that God has not “rejected his people” (11:1). This people continues to be “holy”, that is, in close relationship with God. It is holy because it comes from a holy root, the ancestors, and because their “first fruits” have been blessed (11:16).
Paul does not make it clear whether by “first fruits” he means Israel's ancestors, or the “remnant” sanctified by faith and baptism. He exploits the agricultural metaphor of the tree when he speaks of branches being cut off and grafted (11:17-24). It is understood that the cut off branches are Israelites who have refused to believe in Christ Jesus and that those grafted on are Gentile Christians. To these — as we have already noted — Paul preaches humility: “It is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you” (11:18).
To the branches that have been cut off, Paul opens up a positive perspective: “God has the power to graft them on again” (11:23); this would be easier than in the case of the Gentiles, since it is “their own olive tree” (11:24). In the final analysis, God's plan for Israel is entirely positive: “their stumbling means riches for the world”, “how much more will their full inclusion mean?” (11:12). They are assured of a covenant of mercy by God (11:27,31).
At the time I wrote that article, back in 2005, I said of the new Pope,
I believe the choice of Cardinal Ratzinger as Pope could very well be a hinge upon which history will turn. He is exactly the Pope needed to counter the problems our world is facing today.
I still believe that to this day. Unfortunately, the hinge of history seems to be turning on some sort of deceit within the Vatican. A "lack of communication" as the spokesperson euphemistically put it.
Frankly, I am concerned that the level of deceit, evidenced by these failures to communcate, is evidence of a possible wider conspiracy to disempower the Pope and his agenda. If I were the Pope, I'd hire a food-taster.

Gonna pick up the thread here from Pasto's post on this yesterday.
Pasto -- wider conspiracy. This COULD be where the Catholic Prophecies, especially Fatima and Bayside, come into play.
You (& I) do not have to believe them but the point is most or all in the Vatican do, including Benedict. And that he will be overthrown and succeeded by Petrus Romanus -- The Anti-Christ.
Remember he knew the Third Secret of Fatima was about a loss of faith in the church, especially Europe. He was instrumental in writing that cocked up cover-up about it being about the attempted assassination of JP II.
Now, believe them or not, what if we have some individuals in the Vatican who maybe don't believe them, or maybe they do, AND ARE TRYING TO FULFILL THEM for whatever reason or agenda -- personal, global whatever. Pushing for the Pope to be overthrown to allow Romanus to take the Thrown of Peter whether he is really the anti-Christ or not.
This is really some difficult stuff to explain in comments or a single post. When you can go to that tdlm site I referenced in your earlier post. Go ahead and type Durban or United Nations (Or UN) in the search and see what the prophecies in the 70's said.
Whether true or not, if people BELIEVE they are true and try to work toward them all sorts of strange shit can happen.
This is no simple failure to communicate. The Vatican does not make blunders this big over and over. Something very wrong is afoot here.
Oh dear God.
Have you just suggested that there may be those in the Vatican who think they can bring prophesied events to pass?? Does that sound like someone else we know??
Are we now living in a Ludlum novel?
If so, as one commenter on Atlas said - stop the earth, I wanna get off.
But maybe Benedict is ill and those with an anti-Israel agenda are capitalizing on that.
My experience with Catholicism did not include anti-semitism (as a kid when I heard about the "Christ-killer" thing it made about as much sense to me as hating English aquaintances today for what the UK did to Ireland), but I know there is a virulent strain within some corners of the Church.
It would be good to know Benedict's health status.
Ro
Not quite what I meant to suggest Ro, but using those prophesies, manipulating them if you will, to fit or further their own agenda. Whatever that may be. Not bring a prophecy to pass but create the appearance of it.
Does that make a little more sense?
I never heard the anti-semitism from our parishes, either. Not that it isn't out there, but I never heard it from personal experiences.
I also don't discount that they Pope may be in ill health.
Vatican II was debated and passed between the years 62-65. That's when the whole "Christ-killer" thing was put to an end.
I think MR and Ro are a bit too young to remember back that far.
I'm not Catholic, and I'm too young.
However, I know Jewish people who had firsthand experience with it.
I also know a Jewish woman who stayed with a family in Iowa once, and they asked to see her horns.
True story.
Many Christians used to pass around the rumor that Jewish people had horns on their heads.
By the way, MR. Your theory is fascinating. I'm going to have to read about those prophecies.
I don't usually bother with prophecy stuff. I think it's a waste of time. That being said, I am aware of Christian Biblical prophecies, and I do point them out from time to time, when I think they are relevant to a current news story.
They are intriguing.
I don't often believe in prophecies either and almost never use them to make a point, but they are interesting.
In this case it's not that I think prophecies are coming true, but maybe someone wants to make it look that way for whatever reason.
We agree, the Vatican, for all it's good and bad (and there's plenty of both) is not this sloppy with a message.
So you got to wonder what the hell is going on here.
There´s a dissident priest, Mario Oliveira, Portuguese, who has a very critical view on Fatima.
Yes, I know the "official" story was killed - and I am about the same age as MR.
I have to tell you guys - although I am no longer Catholic, I always appreciated the "dignity of every human being" message from the Popes.
Benedict's writings on Romans are classic - what an amazing God - the Church, in a sense, the "new" or "spiritual" Israel, but God still preserving the "apple of His eye" - in the nation of Israel. As much of a mystery as the Shekinah glory, or the indwelling H.S. in His Church.
I got very, very depressed this afternoon thinking that the one "corporate" voice defending the dignity of every individual soul may be silenced. In some ways, for me, it was the worst news since election day.
Even the Holocaust-denier "rehab" could be chalked up to the Holy See just focusing on the doctrinal issues that had seemed to divide, and not on the odious anti-semitism.
But Durban II?? I agree, something is gravely wrong.
We need to start praying for the Bishop of Rome. I confess, I have not prayed for him specifically up til now.
Ro
The slogan for the supporters of Benedict:
Touche pas à mon Pape!
Ro -- wasn't going to bring this up here because of comments directly below your last.
"In the Third Secret it is foretold, among other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top."
from here: http://www.fatima.org/crusader/cr79/cr79pg03.asp
My point being not that the apostasy has begun but someone who wants to discredit Benedict may -- MAY -- be trying to make it look that way. Wouldn't be the first time in the Church's history there were moves against the Pontiff.
Anonymous -- Touche pas à mon Pape!
Leave my Pope alone. Began showing up on a bunch of facebook pages in France recently when French Catholic websites started getting mail & articles slamming Benedict for the excommunication hubbub and for remarks on contraceptives in Africa.
Did you think I wouldn't know that?
Since I know not who you are, are you a Benedict supporter or are you just here because you couldn't pass up the opportunity to do a little Catholic bashing without contributing anything useful to the conversation?
wasn't going to bring this up here because of comments directly below your last. Why?
Did you think I wouldn't know that?I don´t know what you know and what you don´t know about it. Is what you know an obligatory premise to not to post?
Since I know not who you are, are you a Benedict supporter or are you just here because you couldn't pass up the opportunity to do a little Catholic bashing without contributing anything useful to the conversation?Huh? There´s no bashing in that.
without contributing anything useful to the conversation?Ok. Bye!
HE HAS DISAPPOINTED ME GREATLY.
EUROPE IS DYING AND HE'S DOING NOTHING TO SAVE THE RC CHURCH OR EUROPE.
HE COULD HAVE ALLOWED A MARRIED CLERGY.
HE'S A COWARD
My apologies Anon Touche pas à mon Pape!
You didn't deserve quite that harsh a response.
But neither did you answer my question.
I was a little confused by the term "supporter." Maybe Anon just meant people who look to the Pope for a public stand on certain aspects of Christian morality.
Since I had just id'd myself as a non-Catholic, maybe Anon used the word "supporter" instead of Catholic.
So hard to judge tenor on 'net or in e-mail.
But I cannot abide those little face thingies that some sites provide to help give emotional "context" to comments.
Reminds me of 5th grade notebooks covered in smiley faces, elaborate hearts and puppy doodles.
Ro
Ro -- supporter is what threw me as well. A discussion like this always tends to bring out the bashers and it very much had that tenor to me. Knowing where the phrase came from and not identifying themselves as such also made me defensive.
Had he/she answered the question is you is or is you ain't we could have talked. But they chose, instead, to duck it so I have to assume they ain't.
Oh well. . .
RP,
I agree in some ways that this Pope has been a disappointment. The married clergy is, I believe, a good idea.
But that certainly wouldn't be my first issue.
The hill that I choose to die on, and this is the hill I believed, going in, that Benedict would choose to die on is a dual opposition to
1) the Jihad
2) anti-Semitism
Here's something you need to know:
1) The Pope wrote a book in 2004 called WITHOUT ROOTS: THE WEST, RELATIVISM, CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM - This book clearly laid out the problems with Islam, and the reasons that the West is ill-equipped to defend itself against Islam. Clearly, Pope Benedict knows what the problem is.
I think the Pope simply does not have the will to fight a war.
This is where my criticism of him lies:
Priests and Nuns who serve in non-Christian countries ought to be considered Missionaries, whether or not they are native to that country.
A Missionary is a kind of Warrior of the Spirit. All people who do Missionary work know that they are taking risks with their lives.
When the Pope spoke out against Islam, some Nuns were killed in Muslim countries, and then the Pope shut up and even offered a weak apology.
That was, in my opinion, WRONG. ABSOLUTELY WRONG.
As the head of the Church, he is the General of Warriors of the Spirit. If they must become martyrs, then they become martyrs.
Benedict knows the value of martyrs. It's not only part of the Catholic tradition, but it is part of the Bible.
This is where Benedict has been intolerably weak, and this is where I would think one could call him a coward.
What´s wrong with the word support?
I don´t have to answer any question that is not politely asked.

The following are Quatrains from the book of Nostradamus which reveal the Truth about the coming of the Messiah in the life of OSHO . While speaking about the new religious consciousness, that this Messiah will bring about, Nostradamus predicts the following:
This new religion shall spread the world over. It teaches a new acceptance of life - A kind of magic used as a launch pad to an experience of the divine. This suggests a concept of complete surrender to belief.
(Chapter15)
He will bestow benign enlightenment on people of the world.
(Chapter 15 - C.2, Q. 29)
He will unite the Faiths, Religions and Races into One. He will strike out old traditional rock-like dogmas with his spiritual teachings.
(Chapter 15 - C.9, Q.51)
Nostradamus lists down some major clues to the character of the 'New Religion', its teachings and to the identification of the 'New Spiritual Teacher'.
The person who brings this massive change will appear in Asia.
(Chapter15 - C.10, Q. 75)
Needless to say, Osho was born in India, a part of Asia
He will have a name related to the moon.
(Chapter15 - C.2, Q. 28)
Osho real name is Rajneesh Chandra Mohan - the Lord of the Moon.
'Ears filled with ornate speeches' A great Orator He will point out the fallacies of the traditional practices of the religions, and will preach the hidden treasure of wisdom of all religions, in an easily understandable manner.
(Chapter15 - C.1, Q. 96)
Needless to say , Osho is great orator and highly intelligent man in the world as stated in CIA report to President Ronald Reegan in 1985.
"The Soft voice of the sacred friend is heard under Holy ground - the Human Flame shines for the divine voice." People would wait to hear his Golden words of Truth.
(Chapter15 - C.4, Q. 24)
Persons who are regular visitors to Osho Commune International will touch for the fact that Osho is a great Orator who delivers impromptu speeches which invariably are simple to comprehend and understand. His Soft voice so wonderfull.
He will unite the religions with 'The Mystic Rose'.
(Chapter15 - C.5, Q. 96)
He will use unorthodox devices to stir people up, disturbing the status codes of social and religious behavior in our materialistic times.
(Chapter15 - C.2, Q. 29)
He has the power to transform and liberate the individual to the TRUTH.
