When we were living in Dubai, my wife and I refused to eat Halal food (so basically had to refrain from all meat except fish). The most opposition we faced because of this was from our own church who told us that we should eat it "out of love for our neighbors" even when we told them that we considered it a subjugation to and worship of a foreign god.
So your point is valid but I can see Kathy Allison going, "You've gotta be kidding me!" if a non Muslim objected to Halal crap.
Appeasement in this century only works one way...that is how it has always worked I guess. Only accept the orders and wishes of those who, if offended or felt offended, would wail, kill and maim anyone to get their way.
As long as we appear to be peaceful, no one will respect what we want. That's the basic truth of it all.
Christians were mercilessly attacked for 400 years before the Crusades started. It was the brutality with which the Crusades were executed that broke the spirit and barbarism of Islam, not the love and respect. Crusaders committed a lot of horrible acts but it was, sadly, the same kinds of acts that saved the West.
The enemy we face and the enemy they faced is the same. Muslims take respect and politeness for weakness and logic is seldom understood by the vast majority of Muslims who only understand the sword and the Quran (or the traditions derived from it).
